Names[edit]

I've noticed that for the vehicles that have different names in the NA and PAL versions, the template shows both of them. Is this really necessary? Wouldn't it be better to just have the North American name? GreenDisaster 20:00, 11 June 2012 (EDT)

Move to Template:Mario Kart Wii[edit]

This doesn't need a proposal. This is the obvious route to go (see {{Super Mario Sunshine}} and {{Super Mario Strikers}}).
This proposal aims to move the {{MKW}} template to {{Mario Kart Wii}}. The Nintendo Direct focusing on the Nintendo Switch 2 has officially revealed Mario Kart World, whose name uses the same abbreviation as Mario Kart Wii. If we were to move this template to {{Mario Kart Wii}} and make {{MKW}} as a disambiguation page, then this would fix the solution. That way, both the {{Mario Kart Wii}} template and the {{Mario Kart World}} template will be less confusing.

I have seen that since the announcement of Mario Kart World, the abbreviations on the templates have been removed. Even though we still have two perfect abbreviations to distinguish both games, which are "MKWii" (Mario Kart Wii) and "MKWorld" (Mario Kart World). I think it would be better to rename the templates with those abbreviations, so we don't have to leave them unabbreviated or use the abbreviation "MKW" which causes for confusion. This proposal counts for both Mario Kart Wii and Mario Kart World, since it's unnecessary to make 2 different proposals focusing on the same problem.

Support (abbreviate to "MKWii" and "MKWorld")[edit]

  1. Yoshi18 (talk) Per proposal.
  2. Kaptain Skurvy (talk) This proposal has existed since May and nobody noticed?! But, yeah...I'd prefer "MK Wii" and "MK World" though, just so it's more clear that the "W" isn't part of the "MK" abbreviation.
  3. Rykitu (talk) Per all. Kinda sad to see this proposal not get more than 1 vote until now.
  4. Camwoodstock (talk) While we would prefer a more board approach covering other cases like this, such as the aforementioned "SMSunshine"/"SMStrikers" pair, this is a good start. Per proposal.
  5. Rainbow Road Drifter (talk) Navigation templates are meant to be quick to type, so we should make them as short as possible. We also should abbreviate Sunshine and Strikers to prevent any inconsistency issues.
  6. Daita (talk) Per everyone.

Oppose (leave unabbreviated)[edit]

  1. Mario jc (talk) Why are other templates like {{Super Mario Sunshine}} and {{Super Mario Strikers}} unaffected? This would make it inconsistent with other navboxes whose games share the same abbreviations; I'd rather it's all or nothing.
  2. The User of Altendo (Altendo's user talk page) jc and I, see eye-to-eye.
  3. Power Flotzo (talk) Per JC.
  4. Waluigi Time (talk) Per all. An all or nothing approach makes it easier for editors to remember what templates to use.
  5. Arend (talk) To be consistent with the many other navigation templates sharing the same abbreviation. No, Sunshine and Strikers aren't the only other ones, as shown in Mario jc's search link. Aside from that pair and the Mario Karts, there's at least eight more pairs of these.
  6. Hewer (talk) This just creates an unnecessary inconsistency.
  7. EvieMaybe (talk) per Waluigi Time and Arend. if we're gonna change this, we better do it intelligently
  8. Technetium (talk) Per all.

Abbreviation Comments[edit]

@Mario jc Unlike Sunshine and Strikers, Mario Kart Wii and World do have abbreviations that are commonly used online to distinguish them. MKWii was already used for a long time (even before Mario Kart World was announced) along with MKW. Now that World exists, people only use MKWii and for World we use MKWorld. It wouldn't make sense to leave them unabbreviated if the perfect abbreviations to distinguish both already exist. @Yoshi18 I don't think abbreviated names used online by fans should influence template names. Fan names aren't an acceptable naming source for articles, so they shouldn't be a factor in template names. I still support abbreviating, because templates should be easy to type quickly.
