A Shogun is an ant-like creature and a relative to Armored Ants found in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and its remake. They are seen in the desert region in Land's End where they reside in whirls in the sand, similarly to antlion larvae.
By entering the whirls with Shoguns inside, Mario can make his way through Land's End and reach Belome Temple. However, sometimes the Shogun quickly changes the whirl it is in, and Mario may also have to fight the Shogun before being able to get into the whirl. When getting into one, he reaches another area of Land's End's desert. Jumping on a Shogun outside of battle earns Mario ten coins, and jumping on one three times consecutively earns him one Frog Coin.
This enemy's name is from "Shogun".
More powerful variants of Shoguns known as Armored Ants are found in Barrel Volcano.
