These coins appear in many galaxies, and touching one causes either a trail of notes, several Star Bits or coins, a power-up, a Sling Star, another ? Coin, a Life Mushroom, one or three 1-Up Mushrooms, or a Rainbow Star to appear. In most cases, Mario or Luigi has limited time to collect the item that spawned, and doing so successfully earns him a prize, most commonly a 1-Up Mushroom but also possibly three 1-Up Mushrooms, a power-up, more coins, or Star Bits.
