Throughout the Super Mario franchise, many courses feature objects that act as access points for the player character that, once passed through, prevent access to the area before. They may be referred to as flippers[1][2] (due to their common resemblance to pinball flippers) or one-way gates.[3] Once activated, they remain open as long as the player character stays at their threshold. Flippers are encountered both horizontally and vertically.

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island / Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance

In Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and its reissue, flippers open up to any moving entity, including a Yoshi, an enemy, or a thrown egg.

Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3

Flippers appear in Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 in the following World-e levels: Slidin' the Slopes, Doors o' Plenty, Swinging Bars of Doom, Sea to Sky, Puzzling Pipe Maze, and Treacherous Halls. In this game, the flippers are colored yellow.

Super Mario series

New Super Mario Bros.

A similar type of flipper appears in New Super Mario Bros. in World 2-3 only. These flippers are wooden with red arrows on them indicating which way they open to, and they are usually found individually rather than in pairs. When touched from the opening side, they swing forward 90 degrees around their pivot and remain in place as long as Mario or Luigi is in its range of rotation, returning to the previous position once the character departs from it. They are solid objects; after opening, they act as platforms or ceilings if they stand horizontally, or as walls if they stand vertically.

New Super Mario Bros. 2

New Super Mario Bros. 2 features flippers with a near-identical design and function to those from New Super Mario Bros. They are found in a few levels, such as World 1-A.

Yoshi's Woolly World / Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World

Flippers reappear in Yoshi's Woolly World and Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World, serving the same function as in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and its reissue.

Unused appearances

New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Flippers exist in the assets of New Super Mario Bros. Wii. They use their design from New Super Mario Bros.[4]
