The Star Festival occurs once every century in the Mushroom Kingdom. The festival is held by the kingdom's citizens in celebration of a special comet, which releases Star Bits, that passes through the skies above the Mushroom Kingdom once every one hundred years. The Star Festival is featured in Super Mario Galaxy, and the event serves as the basis for Mario's adventure across the universe.

The Toads of the Mushroom Kingdom gather in the Castle Gardens outside Princess Peach's Castle to celebrate the Star Festival. During the festival, the Toads collect these Star Bits and combine to form a powerful Grand Star, which is brought to Peach's Castle. Princess Peach stumbles upon Luma.

Mario is invited by letter to the Star Festival by Princess Peach, who wants to give Luma as a special gift. Bowser then appears and attacks with a fleet of airships, eventually abducting Peach's Castle with Peach inside. Bowser then transports his fleet and the castle to the center of the universe, which is part of Bowser's plan to conquer and rule the universe with Peach by his side.

After Bowser is beaten and both Mario and Luigi have each collected all 120 Power Stars, the Grand Finale Galaxy level is unlocked, where another Star Festival occurs.
