Peckadees[1] are creatures that appear in Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. They resemble teardrop-shaped woodpeckers with a gray beak and black and white stripes[2], and are found in the Peckadee Habitat. They can be found as both grown adults and smaller chicks.
Peckadees wait for a Yoshi to walk beneath it before dropping down on to them. If Yoshi jumps on a Peckadee, it will become stunned, while a ground pound can defeat it entirely. When riding on Yoshi's back, Peckadees can be thrown to defeat other creatures, activate Winged Clouds, split logs, destroy wooden boxes, cut tall grass, and crack nuts. When a thrown Peckadee hits a rock, it will rebound off of it, allowing Yoshi to hit it back and eventually break the rock.
When a Peckadee is thrown at an apple, hot pepper, or Golden Bug, it will consume it. After it eats a hot pepper in particular, it will turn red and walk faster, as well as become capable of destroying targets and rocks outright. Only adult Peckadees can eat hot peppers.
Peckadees are notably intelligent, able to create the complex wooden contraptions and art inside their nest. They also seem to find a good amount of joy in training their accuracy, as chicks can be seen practicing launching themselves in their nest, and both chicks and adults clap excitedly when Yoshi successfully throws them at one of the targets within their habitat.
