Road Work is one of Jimmy T.'s microgames in WarioWare: Twisted! and later appears in WarioWare Gold as one of Ashley & Red's microgames.

Gameplay

There is a circular road in the center of the screen, consisting of sixteen segments. The game starts with the entire circle active, but soon after most of it will disappear and only six contiguous segments of the road will be left. The section of the road that will remain is indicated by a set of three yellow rectangles positioned at the bottom of the screen just farther out from the original road, and the player controls this set of rectangles. Two arrows briefly appear to the left and right of the rectangles at the start of the microgame to indicate the player can move the rectangles. Tilting the system to the right makes the yellow rectangles. move clockwise around the center of the screen, and tilting left makes them move counterclockwise. After most of the road vanishes, moving the yellow rectangles makes the road form in the direction the yellow rectangles are moving in and vanish in the direction the yellow rectangles are moving away from. In WarioWare Gold, the part of the path remaining can vary between five and six contiguous segments depending on the exact position of the system.

Using these controls, the player has to complete a level dependent task involving an object on the road. The object always starts on the bottom of the screen. If the object is in an area where the road is not, it will fall into the void below, meeting a win or loss condition in the process depending on the level. As the entire road is present at the very start of the microgame, it is impossible to win or lose until the point when the majority of the road vanishes.

  • Level 1: A car drives in a single direction around the road, randomly determined between clockwise and counterclockwise at the start of the microgame. The car must stay on the road for the entirety of the microgame; the microgame is lost if it falls. In WarioWare: Twisted!, the car is red,, it starts the microgame slightly off from the bottom of the screen, and it is moving from the start of the microgame. In WarioWare Gold, the car can either be a red and white dragster or a white and red racecar. Either way, the car only starts moving once the majority of the road vanishes. It is always initially pointed clockwise, even if it will move counterclockwise.
  • Level 2: A cockroach tries to stay in the center of the remaining segments of the road. The goal is to make it fall into the void, which is done by moving the road out from underneath it too fast for it to stay on. In WarioWare: Twisted!, it starts the microgame while moving, just like the car. In WarioWare Gold, the cockroach is still until the majority of the road vanishes.
  • Level 3: A frog jumps to another point where the road can be, of sufficient distance from the origin point, and the player ensure it lands on the road. Otherwise, after reaching its endpoint the frog will fall and cause the player to lose. The road being moved out from under the frog after it has landed has no effect on the microgame, as the frog floats in this circumstance instead of falling. The frog's landing location is telegraphed by the direction it is facing in before it jumps. The frog starts the microgame entirely still in both WarioWare: Twisted! and WarioWare Gold. In WarioWare Gold, the frog can only jump to the opposite side of the road, with a minimal amount of variation in where it lands. However, the part of the road remaining after the start of the game only has three or four segments instead of the normal five or six segments.
