Chapter 1

そらからおちてきたベビーマリオのまき ("The story of Baby Mario who fell from the sky!")

Many years ago, a Stork was delivering Baby Mario and Baby Luigi to their new home, when Kamek appeared and attacked the stork to kidnap the babies. He manages to snatch one of the bundled up babies, while the other one plummeted down. Back to his base in King Bowser's Castle, Kamek informs his master Bowser that he successfully took Mario, a baby that will bring trouble to the Turtle Tribe once he grows up, however Bowser notices that the Baby's cap has an "L". Interrogating his Crystal Ball (a little Burt), Kamek discovers that he only took Mario's weak twin brother Luigi and immediately departs to catch Baby Mario.

Meanwhile, Baby Mario uses his bundle as a parachute and cape to safely land on Yoshi's Island, between a group of Yoshis. Mario climbs on top of the green Yoshi and incites him to go forward. Just then, a map also falls from the sky, helping the Yoshis to understand where the baby wants to go. Kamek arrives and demands that the Yoshis surrder the baby to him, but the Yoshis refuse to hand over a "fellow big-nosed brother" to a "squashed nose fiend". Offended, Kamek casts an explosive spell that separates the Yoshis. Green Yoshi finds himself alone, and grows worried for what happened to the baby, but Baby Mario appears, enclosed in a bubble, explaining that, since he is destined to be a hero, the stars are protecting him. Hearing that, Yoshi decides to leave, claiming that Baby Mario will not have any trouble then, but after hearing the baby's loud cry, he decides to continue carrying him on his back.

An army of Shy-Guys approaches the duo, so Baby Mario tells Yoshi to fly over them (having some sparse vision of the future, Baby Mario is able to tell him he can fly). Confused, Yoshi tries to listen to him, but only manages to flutter over the Shy-Guys. The enemies then uses some bamboo stilts to prevent Yoshi from jumping over them again, but Yoshi eats their stilts, laying some eggs in the process, which he then proceeds to throw at the Shy-Guys that called him names for being deprived of their stilts. The last two remaining Shy-Guys fly away in fear, thanks to their propellers, toward a castle. Baby Mario incites Yoshi to go after them, but when they are crossing a river, a Spray Fish emerges and prevents them from advancing by spitting water at them. Yoshi decides to surrender, but Baby Mario explains they cannot give up, they need to rescue his twin brother Luigi from Kamek's master's clutches. Hearing that, a liquid lift, takes them and carries them over the river, much to the Spray Fish's surprise.

When Baby Mario asks how liquid lift's body is so malleable, it explains it is all thanks to the vinegar, gifting them a flask. Baby Mario makes Yoshi drink the vinegar and molds him into a helicopter. The chase continues in the air, so the Fly Guys deploy a bunch of Fuzzies soaked in alchool to stop Yoshi. Yoshi falls for the trick and gets drunk after ingesting them and crashes into the fortress, losing his helicopter form. Inside, Kamek is waiting for them with the giant Salvo the Slime, who unleashes an avalanche of Lemon Drops to attack Yoshi. Yoshi backs up, but Kamek enlarges his crystal ball in a giant Burt. Yoshi nearly collapses from hunger, but Baby Mario tells him to resist and gets an idea. He informs the giant Burt that his pants are on backwards. As he tries to fix them, Mario uses his hat emblem pin to pop Burt like a balloon, leavin behind his bowl-shaped pants, in which the Lemon Drops and Salvo jump in. Mistaking the pants and slimes as a bowl of hot buns, Yoshi eats them all in one gulp.

Baffled, Kamek and the two Fly Guys run away, while Yoshi claims the castle. Once outside, he reunites with Red Yoshi. After explaining the situation to him, Green Yoshi passes him the Baby and Red is ready to tackle the next area. And Baby Mario and Red Yoshi proceed on their way, Green Yoshi expresses the hope that Red's hotheadedness does not get in the way.

Chapter 2[edit]

Chapter 2

ハードにかけぬけろ! アスレチックコースのまき ("Run faster! Athletic stages")

With Red Yoshi with the Baby-baton, he proceeds to rush the entire area, unbothered if Baby Mario bumps his head on every low hanging branch or stallagmite. From the second castle, the two Fly Guys inform Kamek of the upcoming Red Yoshi, but since he has more important matters to attend to (his gardening hobby), the wizard sends the Fly Guys to deal with him. Dressed up as a Green Glove and his student Slugger, they block Red Yoshi's run. They sic three Gusties against the Yoshi, but he gulps them, laying three eggs. A Little Mouser then steals one of the eggs and takes them to the Baseball Boys, who then throw it at Yoshi's face. Angered, Red Yoshi charges at them, but they step away and Red Yoshi falls on a bed of spikes, dying impaled. Baby Mario, who jumped off his back, demands to know the identity of the Baseball Boys, but they reveal to be normal Shy-Guys, and as such they can also use tribal weapons, vegetation camouflage, and even inflate or stretch.

With the presentations done, the Shy-Guy duo sends a platoon of Koopa Paratroopas to take Baby Mario. As Mario starts to cry, a star falls from the sky and Baby Mario takes it, turning into Powerful Mario. Doing so, the two remaining Yoshi's eggs follow him, as well as a giant egg containing Red Yoshi, revived in the process. After taking care of the Paratroopas and Shy-Guy duo, the latter fall back to the castle. With Red Yoshi back in the game, him and Baby Mario follow the Shy-Guys. While on their tail, Yoshi enters the Grinders's territory, who, offended by one of his remarks, attacks him with watermelon seeds, but Yoshi dodges them, steal one of their watermelons and responds to the fire, until a chain of Grinders swings and snatch Baby Mario away, taking him on a tree. Baby Mario is able to toss Red Yoshi the flask of vinegar to transform himself into something: he transforms into a locomotive and rams into the tree, causing everyone to fall. After catching Baby Mario, Red Yoshi spots something in the bushes and attacks it with watermelon seeds: it is Kamek.

He escapes and locks himself inside the castle. With the door locked, Red Yoshi and Baby Mario figure out that there must be a spare key in the garden. After breaking all the flower pots (much to Kamek's dismay), they find a key inside one of them and access the castle. Inside, Kamek and the Shy-Guys pretend to be ghosts and ghouls to scare them away, but their cover is blown by their recognizable voices. Still angry about the flowers, Kamek summons a ghost from his last remaining flower pot to avenge his brothers: the Potted Ghost. The Potted Ghost starts pushing Red Yoshi with his body, while the two Shy-Guys hold onto his pot to keep it from falling. Understanding that the pot is the weak spot, Baby Mario suggests Yoshi to push it over the ledge behind the Shy-Guys. Yoshi follows and soon enough both the monster and its helpers are gone.

Even more angry, Kamek summons his pride and joy as Red Yoshi and Baby Mario's opponent: Naval Piranha. The monster spits out a bunch of Nipper Plants at Yoshi who, in the ensuing panic, loses one of his boots which hits the giant navel of the plant, causing it to scream in pain. Having located his weak spot, Yoshi gulps the Nipper Plants and shoots all of the eggs against the navel. Kamek pleads to him to stop it, otherwise Naval Piranha will blow up, but that does not deter his enemy. Kamek flees just in time and Naval Piranha explodes. Tired out from the rush and the explosion, Red Yoshi passes Baby Mario onto the next Yoshi: the calm but grumpy-looking Blue.

Chapter 3[edit]

Chapter 3

ステキなバカいぬポチ登場とうじょう!!のまき ("The wonderful and silly dog Poochy makes his debut!")

Blue Yoshi and Baby Mario proceed forward. Mario keeps trying to make conversation, but Blue sticks to his "cool and silent guy" persona. Suddenly, a new enemy rushes them, a giant dog-like creature with a silly expression. Not at all scared, Blue jumps on top of him, calling him a "stupid dog", but Baby Mario insists that he is deserving of a name, calling him Poochy. Soon realizing that the dog does not seem aggressive and just wants to play, Blue agrees on riding him. Entering the Flutters territory, Blue asks Poochy to not hit them and anger them, but he fails to follow the instructions, angering a couple of them. After Blue Yoshi scolds him, Poochy comes to an halt, causing the Yoshi to flinch and fall off his back, growing his resentment towards the mutt.

Finally arriving in view of the next castle, only a giant gorge separates them from the palace. From a bush, Poochy pulls out an air pump and a red balloon that Blue Yoshi and Baby Mario can use to ride across the gorge. As the float away and Baby Mario thanks Poochy for the help, Kamek arrives and punishes the mutt minion by dropping a bunch of Chomps at him. Hearing his cries of help, Baby Mario insists to go back and save him, but the cold Blue Yoshi explains that Poochy served his purpose for them. Venting his frustration at his companion's coldness, Baby Mario states he will continue without him. Blue Yoshi does not stop him: once they cross the gorge, he leaves Baby Mario and he goes on his way. Baby Mario tries to take back his words, but Blue Yoshi insists that if he can talk like a man he can act on his words like one.

Without Yoshi, Mario is unable to proceed, seeing how he can barely walk, and cannot fend for himself, when a couple of Koopa Troopas attack him but then, realizing he cannot be the same baby they are looking for, seeing that he is without a Yoshi companion, leave him injured on the floor. Even his cries to the sky for another star go unanswered. Alone and scared, Baby Mario is approached by someone: an unborn baby girl who is traveling with a pelican. She asks him what is wrong, and he explains he is alone fighting the rough life. The girl slaps him, causing Baby Mario to see stars floating around his head, but also giving him one to become powerful. Thanking the girl he calls "good as a peach", Baby Mario continues.

After spotting Kamek, Baby Mario demands to fight with him, but the wizard summons a giant Milde to take care of him, but Powerful Mario effortlessly defeats him. With Baby Mario approaching the castle, Kamek summons a giant Shark Chomp to devour him, right as the star loses its effect. To rescue Mario from being devoured is a talking car who later reveals to be the rebellious Light Blue Yoshi. After tricking the Shark Chomp to get past him by extending his wheels and making it pass under the car, the enemy crashes fang-first into castle: the pain of the shattered teeth causes the Shark Chomp to turn into stone. Using the rock, Light Blue Yoshi slams it against the castle once more, destroying it. From the debris, the castle owner appears: the giant Hookbill the Koopa. Light Blue manages to dodge his stomping feet and claw swipes, but Hookbill catches Baby Mario by the cape. Just then Blue Yoshi arrives with Poochy: while not fond of the dog, he listened to Baby Mario's request and went back to rescue him. With his eggs, Blue manages to make Hookbill fling and make him fall on his shell. As he struggles to get up, Blue, Light Blue, Poochy and Baby Mario perform a Pound on Hookbill's stomach, defeating him. Kamek is furious and leaves, reminding the group that Baby Luigi is still his hostage in the sky castle.

Chapter 4[edit]

Chapter 4

雪山ゆきやまはさむいそ すべるそてんやわんや!!のまき ("Snowy mountains are cold, slippery, and chaotic!")

To reach the sky fortress, Blue Yoshi suggests climbing the mountain to see if it is possible to find a way up. As the climb up the mountain, the clear sky gives way to snowy weather. Soon enough, a Lakitu with a cloud adorned with Raijin drums appears, dropping lightning bolts. The group hides inside an ice cave, where Light Blue finds a very cold watermelon and Poochy proves himself very useful by breaking the dangerous icicles and carrying everyone over a bed of spikes. After arming themselves with eggs thanks to a flock of Fangs, the Yoshi attack Lakitu once they get out of the cave, breaking his cloud and then Light Blue Yoshi freezes him thanks to the icy breath gained by the icy watermelon. Seeing Poochy as their biggest threat, Kamek (via his new crystal ball) asks the Bandits to take care of him.

Disguised as Dr. Freezegoods, the Bandits welcome the group to the mountain's ski resort, but inform that pets cannot accest the Ski Lifts. With a heavy heart, Baby Mario must leave behind Poochy, under the suggestion of the Yoshis, he even puts a mean kid act to keep him from following them. It works, but once on the Ski Lift, Baby Mario drops the act to wave goodbye, enciting the dog to follow them, but in the process he falls into a shallow ravine. Luckily, the dog landed in deep snow and will not follow the group, even better, the group reunites with Green Yoshi and Red Yoshi: after recovering, Red took Green ahead with his fiery speed and preceeded Baby Mario's group at the end of the Ski Lifts. The Dr. Freezegoods gives skiing equipment to the Yoshis and a bobsled to Baby Mario and just as they are getting ready, the Bandits come out of the costumes and shove down the hill the group, then chase Baby Mario down, while Kamek tries to squash the Yoshis with more falling Chomps. Blue ends up tripping and rolls down in a snowball, Green slams against a rock, while Red is run over by one of the Bandits. Meanwhile, Baby Mario flings off a ramp, heading towards another castle, but falls off the bobsled. Light Blue drinks up some vinegar and catches him in submarine form (after failing to shape-shift into something more appropriate for the situation), landing safe and sound inside the castle, who they find damped.

From the shadows, the owner decides to punish them for traspassing by sending Sluggies after them, but Light Blue Yoshi eats them all. Angered by the loss of its kids, the owner comes forth, revealing it to be the giant Sluggy the Unshaven. With its body mass, Sluggy the Unshaven blocks the corridor and slowly pushes the intruders towards a ledge. Yoshi tries to stop it with his eggs, but they bounce off his slimy body, worrying him that this enemy might not have a weakness, but Baby Mario spots a giant hairy heart inside Sluggy. Throwing at it everything they got (including Baby Mario's cap and Yoshi's boots), they reach and strike the heart, causing an explosion that blows up the castle. One of the debris falls right beside the frozen Lakitu, thawing him. Meanwhile, Blue, Red, and Yoshi got back up and took care of the Bandits and tried to reach the sky castle by turning into helicopters, but due to the rarefied air, they are unable to go further. As Light Blue and Baby Mario reunite with them, Lakitu, boarding his repaired cloud, catches the baby with his fishing rod and brings him to Kamek, much to the Yoshi's surprise.

Bonus[edit]

4-koma chapter

スーパーマリオヨッシーアイランド おまけ4コマ ("Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island Bonus 4-koma")

  • 言葉ことばのあやまち〜 ("Mistakes with words"): Mario is showing Princess Peach his baby photos. Peach comments "You were so cute as a baby", but soon both realize that her compliment implies he no longer is.
  • むかしばなし ("Once upon a very long time"): Peach comes to the conclusion that, if Mario spent his first days with dinosaurs, he must be born in the Cambrian period.
  • わざわいなうらない・・・・ ("A disastrous fortune-teller..."): Kamek prophetizes that a baby will be born that day that will bring misfortune to the Koopa clan. Some times later, Kamek returns with a bundled up baby and shows it off to Baby Bowser, who is unimpressed and asks him if he got it for real. Kamek asks if that means he does not believe in him, and Baby Bowser replies he does not by glancing at the pile of wrong babies that were previously snatched by the wizard.

Cameos and caricatures[edit]

Fictional works[edit]

  • The Jungle Book: upon Baby Mario's arrival, one of the Yoshis suggests raising him so that they can monetize on a sequel to Rudyard Kipling's book with "the kid raised by dinosaurs".
  • Zutto Anata ga Suki datta: when Baby Mario asks Blue Yoshi if he really does not care to what happens to Poochy, he quotes Shirō Sano's character's sentence: "Life is the factorization of death."
  • Ultra Q: when Light Blue Yoshi explains that he froze Lakitu with his icy breath, Baby Mario asks if he meant to say "ice beam", as many anime and show called elemental breathing "beams". A side note blames the TV series Ultra Q, the first title in the Ultraman franchise, which popularized the "elemental beam" term in kaiju-themed works.

Videogames[edit]

  • Super Puyo Puyo/Kirby's Avalanche: since the Lemon Drops are similar to Puyo, Salvo's attack which consists in releasing a bunch of them is called "Kirby's deadly avalanche attack", in reference to the American title of the international version of Super Puyo Puyo, which became a Kirby title.

As a manga artist, my body tends to get out of shape, so I wear a 70kg suit of armor while working at my desk. Sharpening my pencils with a sword-like tool also strengthens my wrists, which is great. I highly recommend it.
