Chapter 1[edit]
ヨッシー
Lakitu brings Baby Mario to Kamek in the Sky Castle, who in turn takes him to Bowser. As the seemingly-adult Bowser compliments Kamek, he hears cawing coming from his master and discovers it to be Raphael the Raven in disguise: the master went out ("to have fun", as Kamek rightfully presumes), leaving him alone with the babies. Baby Mario, finally off Lakitu's hook, demands that Baby Luigi is set free and to fight Bowser. Kamek uses his crystal ball to see where Bowser went: the crystal ball shows Bowser (revealed to still be a baby and not the imposing grow-up figure seen in the shadows until then) riding a Goonie and following the pelican with the baby girl that helped Mario, who is still hanging around since she has to wait for the Mario Bros. to be delivered before she can be born. Baby Bowser explains he saw her through a telescope and fell in love with her. In response, the girl states that hitting on a girl that is not even born yet is a perverted move. Stunned, Baby Bowser falls off his ride, while Kamek embarassly turns off the crystal ball.
Baby Bowser plummets down to the island, right next to the snow pile Poochy fell into. Having heard Baby Bowser's noise, Poochy gets out of the snow and starts running around, kicking Baby Bowser away and finding four other Yoshis trapped in ice. Licking off the ice, Poochy frees them: they thank the dog and present themselves as the noble Purple Yoshi, the effeminate Pink Yoshi, the clever but slow Yellow Yoshi, and the normal Brown Yoshi. Poochy uses snow sculptures to convey the situation to them. Later, after transforming into a Mole Tank, the Yoshis and Poochy reunite with Green, Red, Blue, and Light Blue. After some brainstorming, the Yoshis try to take down the castle by flinging a giant wooden stake with a giant slingshot, but it does nothing, so the Yoshis start to pile one onto another and, with a little boost from Poochy, they manage to reach the castle and the Green Yoshi on top uses his tongue to fling the entire pile up.
While Baby Mario tries to reunite with the Yoshi, Kamek activates the emergency system, which makes the castle and the cloud where it stands collapse, revealing a small little planet underneath. Everyone on the cloud, except for Kamek, Raphael and the Yoshis, fall down. Green Yoshi manages to catch Baby Mario with his tongue, while Poochy falls towards his demise. Kamek departs to look for Bowser, leaving the Yoshis to Raphael. With his ability to create lightning bolts every step he makes, Raphael manages to make most of the Yoshis fall off the planet. Only Green Yoshi and Baby Mario remain. Unable to hurt him with the eggs, Yoshi slips off the side of the planet, landing on the stake they planted against the cloud, now stuck in the planet, and losing Baby Mario. Floating inside the bubble, Baby Mario sees that Raphael is located on the other side of the stake's stump, and tells Yoshi to jab it. Yoshi executes, and Raphael gets stabbed by the stake on the other side. Hurt, Raphael flies off into the sky. Yoshi celebrates his victory, only to realize that Baby Mario's bubble is floating away too towards the sky, to "where everybody is waiting". Baby Mario waves goodbye to Yoshi, left stranded on the planet, and he does not even get the time to mourn the loss of his friends and the baby, as a giant Baby Bowser looms behind him.
Chapter 2[edit]
ヒーローベビー あしたのためにそのいちの
The giant Baby Bowser nabs Yoshi from the planet and then returns to his original stature to ride him. At first, Yoshi tries to take advantage of the shrunk down Baby Bowser, but Kamek arrives and magically bridles him, turning him into Baby Bowser's steed, informing him that any form of rebellion will result in the bridles to tighten up. He does try to have the bridles removed when Baby Bowser asks him to turn into a Mole Tank, by explaining he needs to drink vinegar for that, but Baby Bowser gives him through the nostrils. When Kamek asks what he intends to do with the Mole Tank, Baby Bowser explains he wants to create a magma flow and turn Yoshi's Island into a place fit for a Koopa King.
Meanwhile, Baby Mario is taken by his bubble to a strange place in the sky, while a halo appears over his head. A Grunt appears, explaining that they are at the gates of Hell and Heaven, but since Baby Mario has not been born yet, he needs to go back. Baby Mario obeys, but a line of Blow Hards shoots Needlenoses at him. Instinctively, Baby Mario calls for Yoshi's help, before remembering he is on his own. The Grunt explains that he cannot always relay on others to progress, but that around him he can always find an ally. In fact, Baby Mario spots a Egg Plant and uses the eggs it spawns to defeat the Blow Hards. Before he can even get across them, a bunch of Nipper Spores spawn a bunch of Nipper Plants, forcing Baby Mario to retreat, despite the Grunt pushing him to fight as he cannot continue towards the afterlife. A Zeus Guy appears to train him on how to throw punches ("For the sake of tomorrow part 1") and the secret karate technique: there are no first strikes, nor stances, therefore there are no secret techniques ("For the sake of tomorrow part 2"). Baby Mario succeeds and manages to defeat the enemy blockades. Witnessing his success, the Zeus Guy disappears, reavling himself to be the spirit of Mas Oyama, while the Grunt gifts Baby Mario of his last Star, before sending him back to Yoshi's Island, now reduced to a mamga-filled wasteland.
Back on Earth, Baby Mario takes a few eggs from an Egg Plant, then encounters a dried-up Lunge Fish, whose pond was left barren following the rise of magma levels. As he asks who created this mess, Baby Bowser appears along with Kamek and Yoshi. Baby Mario recognizes him as the "kid that was rejected by a girl in diapers", while he explains he turned the island into a volcanic area to create lots of hot springs for him and his crush, hoping for a "mixed bath moment" (to which he gets slapped by the baby girl with a paper fan, flying by with her pelican). The Mole Tank transformation ends, and Yoshi returns to his normal state. Baby Bowser orders him to attack Baby Mario, but Yoshi refuses and faints from the pain of the bridles tightening up around his snout. Baby Mario lies that Yoshi has to eat sweet potatoes all year round, so that bridle is hindering him. Believing him, Baby Bowser kicks away Yoshi, and Baby Mario rescues him, feeding a sweet egg taken by the Egg Plant to put him back in shape and full of energies. Furious for being tricked, Baby Bowser orders Kamek to make him bigger, and Kamek turns into a giant, specifying that this time the magic will last longer than before. Yoshi takes Baby Mario and tries to run for it, but Kamek blocks them by summoning a giant Tap-Tap mech. Baby Mario and Yoshi and Yoshi are surrounded by two large and giant enemies, and the situation becomes more and more bleak.
Chapter 3[edit]
After surrounding Yoshi and Baby Mario, Kamek suggests not even giving them the honor of being beaten by them, summoning his toadies instead. Yoshi initially dodged the incoming Toadies, but when Mega Baby Bowser threatens to squash Baby Luigi if they continue, Yoshi instead eats the Toadies. Angry, Kamek moves the giant Tap-Tap mech forwards, crushing Yoshi under his foot. Before being squashed, Yoshi shoves Baby Mario away. He tries to save him by pulling out the Star given to him by the Grunt, but Kamek steals it from his hands with a Ultra Hand. Just as Kamek is about to use the Star on himself, a fleet of multicolored Helicopter Yoshis appears: as they explain they used the vinegar to turn into helicopters and survive the fall, they combine together to create a massime rainbow train. Ramming against the Tap-Tap mech, the Yoshis manage to push the robot over a pit of lava, destroying it, while Kamek mounts on his broom.
As he flies off, the Star he stored in his pocket falls straight into a Tulip, causing it to spew more of them. Mario takes them and passes them to the morphed Yoshis, turning them in Powerful Yoshis. While they take care of Kamek and his Toadies, Powerful Mario leaps towards Mega Baby Bowser and lands a punch that throws him in a lava pit. The battle is over, and the Yoshis have reconquered their island, but Mega Baby Bowser remerges from the lava, puts down the Powerful Yoshi with his Fire Breath and then focuses his attention on Baby Mario: apparently, he absorbed the lava, giving him more strenght and power.
As Mega Baby Bowser lands a punch on Baby Mario, sending him flying against a wall, the Yoshis decide to lend him their last remaining vital strenght to infuse him with their big-nose power, granting him the Super Ultra Hyper Space Q power to create a massime energy ball to cast against the enemy. Unfortunately, Mega Baby Bowser is too strong and the energy ball bounces off him. Baby Mario starts losing hope, but Zeus Guy's spirit reappears, reminding him to never give up. Baby Mario takes a stance, as Mega Baby Bowser steps towards him. Seeing Baby Mario's defiance, Green Yoshi grabs the vinegar and drinks it, transforming into Poochy's Glove. Mega Baby Bowser is not scared, but Baby Mario wears it and as he throws the punch, tells him that Poochy's paws are so hard that not even spikes can penetrate them. He lands a punch in Mega Baby Bowser's face, causing him to cry so much the volcanos are put out and Baby Bowser returns to his normal size.
Kamek takes Baby Bowser and flies off, vowing revenge, as the Yoshis celebrate Baby Mario. As they throw him in the air, the Stork arrives and catches him to bring him to his parents. Green Yoshi bids a tearful farewell to Baby Mario, hoping to see again him. The chapter ends with the Yoshis consoling their green friend, while Baby Luigi emerges from a trash can in King Bowser's Castle's debris: everyone forgot about him.
- Epilogue(s)
- エピローグ① ルイージはどうなったの? ("Epilogue 1: What ever happened to Luigi?") Poochy is still alive and emerges from the ground below Baby Luigi, accidentally picking him up and starts chasing his master by following the Stork, thus allowing Luigi to be delivered to his parents.
- エピローグ②
伝説 の三色 ヨッシーになった理由 ("Epilogue 2: The reason why the Yoshis became the legendary three-colored Yoshis"): while being carried by the Stork, Baby Mario grades his impression the other Yoshis gave him on a notebook: passing with flying colors are Red who was very fired up with passion; Blue who, despite his coldness, is wise and kind; and Yellow for his effort, despite his slow-thinking. Meanwhile the others get a lower grade: Light Blue for his rashness; Pink for his transvestite-like ways; Brown for his color; and Purple for his snobby ways. These grades ultimately determined which Yoshi would become part of the legendary trio in Star World in Super Mario World, years later.
Chapter 4[edit]
バトルふたたびあとの
Some time after the last chapter, the Huffin Puffin delivery service brings a package to the Mario and Luigi's family's house. With their parents out, the baby brothers answer the door and receive the package, which contains Green Yoshi, who came to invite Baby Mario to the Yoshi Festival. After he turns into a helicopter, Baby Mario hops on Yoshi and asks Luigi to take care of the house in his absence, despite him wanting to come too.
Meanwhile, at the newly rebuilt King Bowser's Castle, now located on a distant cloud from Yoshi's Island, Baby Bowser calls upon Ninja Heihōmaru to take back the island for himself. Heihōmaru proposes to infiltrate during the festival by fusing with his Froggy companion, after enlarging him and putting a Yoshi's snout to pass him as a Yoshi. Baby Bowser agrees, but Kamek asks for more time to summon a powerful ally. Baby Bowser refuses, stating that his "western magic" is unreliable and instead trusts in ninjitsu techniques. Baby Bowser and the giant Froggy jump on the island, passing Froggy for the Yoshi god. The Yoshis believe him and bow down to him, only for their "god" to tie them up.
Meanwhile, while traversing the sea Yoshi and Baby Mario are blocked by a Nep-Enut. It demands they answer a riddle, before they can pass: "Who would answer "yes" to the question "Are you a grandmother?"?" Baby Mario correctly answer that would be Nep-Enut itself.[A] Nep-Enut lets them pass, even offering to come to their rescue if they need any help in the future. As Yoshi and Baby Mario arrive at the island, they are attacked by an army of seed-spitting Grinders (and Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, and Dixie Kong). Confused by how the monkeys have become aggressive like during Baby Bowser's reign, Yoshi grabs a Red Watermelon and stops the Grinders by burning them, then, with a help of a Bubble Dayzee, puts out the fire before it spreads out. Right after that, a Dizzy Dandy, an Eggo-Dil, and two Piranha Plants attack them, but Yoshi manages to avoid them.
After taking their breath, Baby Mario and Yoshi hear Shy-Guys chanting in the distance "Skewered Yoshis": a Melon Bug explains that Baby Bowser's Minions are ready to sacrifice the Yoshis by the cliff. Upon checking, Yoshi and Baby Mario are ambushed by Baby Bowser and Froggy, getting swallowed by the latter, while the former promises them to turn them into feces. The Spear Guys are then asked by Baby Bowser to chant about his new reign, instead of keep going with "Skewered Yoshis", or else they will be swallowed too. Misunderstanding his words, the Spear Guys now chant "Skewered King Bowser", so they get eaten by Froggy too. Inside the frog's stomach, Heihōmaru appears in the uvula, warning the swallowed victims about the stomach acids. After seeing a Piscatory Pete being turned into a skeleton by an acid drop, everyone starts to panic while trying to climb out of the throat, only for Heihōmaru to attack them back down with a Dangling Ghost attack. Baby Mario gets an idea and instructs the Spear Guys to throw their weapons at the uvula. They do so, and Heihōmaru and Froggy get so hurt that the frog explodes, freeing everyone he ate.
Heihōmaru puts on a propeller and takes Baby Bowser away, but Baby Mario is not done with them yet. He calls for Nep-Enut, who appears with a lift on his head. It raises Baby Mario above Baby Bowser and he drops, soiled diaper first, on his face, causing him and Heihōmaru to fall into the sea below. With Baby Bowser defeated once more, the Yoshis, Baby Mario, the Spear Guys, and even the baby girl (who is still roaming around), take part to the Yoshi festival.
Meanwhile, after Heihōmaru and Baby Bowser return to the castle, they find out Kamek successfully summoned a Grim Leecher, ready to take one of them to the afterlife.
- Epilogue
- エピローグ③ その
後 の水色 & ピンクヨッシー ("Epilogue 3: What happens to Light Blue Yoshi and Pink Yoshi"): years later, Light Blue Yoshi would embrace his rebellious side and became a bully known as Boshi, while Pink Yoshi embraced his transvestite-ways and became a beautiful "girl" named Birdo.
Cameos and caricatures[edit]
Real-life people[edit]
- Rie Tomosaka: Japanese actress and pop-star Rie Tomosaka is briefly namedropped by Yoshi at the end of chapter 1 when he mistakes the looming Mega Baby Bowser for her. At the start of the second chapter, Baby Bowser continues the gag by asking if it was due to the big lower lip, while Yoshi tells him they should stop continuing a joke from the last chapter. Baby Mario also makes the same joke in chapter 4, when reencountering Baby Bowser.
- Akiko Hinagata: upon Kamek's arrival, Yoshi also mentions Japanese actress and then-gravure idol Akiko Hinagata, likely referring to her role as one of the first victims in the 1995 TV drama Ring, where she takes on a horrifying expression upon death.
- Mas Oyama: the Zeus Guy reveals himself to be the spirit of Korean-Japanese boxer Mas Oyama, founder of the Kyokushin Karate style.
Fictional works[edit]
- Tomorrow's Joe: chapter 2's title and Zeus Guy's training are named after chapters (and episodes) of the Tomorrow's Joe manga (and anime) series.
- Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Baby Bowser's treat of killing Baby Mario and Yoshi is stated to be said in a "Gundam style". This refers to the ending of the first episode of "Mobile Suit Gundam Wing," when the protagonist Heero Yuy attempts to kill Relena Darlian’s romantic interest in him on the spot. This scene is also accompanied by a fanart (credited to a highschool girl from Nagano Prefecture) of Relena hitting Heero with a slipper for "teaching such things to a baby", while in a corner their friend Chang Wufei eyerolls at their fight.
- JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: at the beginning of chapter 3, surrounded by the last two giant bosses, Yoshi exclaims in Engrish "Oh My God!", one of the many catchphrases of Joseph Joestar that have recently gained popularity in internet culture and memes.
- Super Mario 4-koma Daikōshin 2: as Yoshi points out, Nep-Enut's riddle is recycled from Kazuki Motoyama's skit「なぞなぞ」("Riddle") from this manga's first chapter, in which Baby Mario poses this question to a Blargg, who is unable to come with a solution.
