“All right, there, Marty-o. You can have the Emerald Star...the Crystal Star that resided in this tree!”
Puni elder, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

The Emerald Star is the second of the Crystal Stars Mario collects in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, obtained upon completing Chapter 2: The Great Boggly Tree.

According to the legend of the Crystal Stars as told by Grifty, the Emerald Star was given to the Punies to guard as a favor of the Goomba hero for saving them from monsters. The Goomba hollowed out a large tree for the Punies to make their home in, where the Emerald Star has since been guarded.[1] During Mario's adventure, the X-Nauts take over the Great Tree in search for the Emerald Star and capture many of the Punies living inside. As Mario rescues the Punies, he discovers the location of the Emerald Star in the tree's basement. However, the leader of the X-Naut team, Lord Crump, quickly steals the Emerald Star once it is revealed. In an effort to keep the Emerald Star to himself, Lord Crump activates a time bomb while he makes his way to the entrance, only to be stopped by the Puni elder, allowing Mario and his partners to catch up with him. Crump then deactivates the system and fights Mario in the Magnus von Grapple suit. Upon recovering the Emerald Star, the Puni elder allows Mario to have it for the time being, and the star teaches Mario the move Clock Out to use in battle.

During the final battle with the Shadow Queen, when the Crystal Stars spread out to the locations in which they were found, the Emerald Star returns to the Great Tree, where the Punies are alerted of the situation Mario and his team are in and cheer them on before the final round.
