The Soundfrog is a character featured in Super Mario Maker and its Nintendo Switch sequel, Super Mario Maker 2. Its appearance is a green, cartoonish frog, similar to the one found in the Mario Paint composer. By tapping the Soundfrog icon on the left-hand side of the editing screen, the player can access a variety of sound effects to use in their course. Soundfrog is eventually unlocked in the game alongside the sixth shipment of editing tools.

The sound effects can be placed onto the backdrop and will play if Mario touches them, but they can also be placed onto objects and enemies and will play the noise if the object does a specific thing (for example, hitting a ? Block from below). Most sound effects create visuals and will appear as the sound itself plays. Additionally, there is a sample course in the game called "Sound Effects" that shows the player how sound effects work and what they can do.

The Soundfrog itself is also one of the creators of the "Official" courses in the game. Its first course, Muncher Mayhem, was released a day after the game's version 1.20 update.

In Super Mario Maker 2, Mario can receive jobs from Soundfrog in Story Mode. In Story Mode, it dances to create "atmosphere" for the castle and will offer to dance on command once its jobs are completed. A zipper appears on its back, implying it may actually be someone wearing a frog costume.

Super Mario Maker 2

This section is referring to a subject in an upcoming or recently released game. When the game is released, or more information about this subject is found, this section may need major rewriting.
This notice should be removed after a month has passed since the game was first released.

Soundfrog and sound effects return in Super Mario Maker 2 with new additions.[1] All of them are now categorized in five different groups similar to the course elements: feelings, stingers, reactions, animations, and music.[2][3] When playing in an underwater or Ghost House course set at nighttime, certain sound effects serve as temporary light sources when they are triggered.

Feelings

The feelings category is represented by a smiling face and colored yellow.

Booo! A childish voice blowing a raspberry. Its icon is a pouting cartoon face.[4]
Cheer A crowd cheering. Its icon is a blowhorn (although reused from Super Mario Maker, the sound effect itself is different).[4]
Baby* The baby sound effect from Mario Paint. Its icon is a baby face.[3]
Party Popper Celebratory sparkles and bright screen accompanied by bursts of confetti from the sides of the screen. Its icon is a party popper.[2][3]
Applause An audience clapping. Its icon is a pair of hands clapping (although reused from Super Mario Maker, the sound effect itself is different).[3]
Near Miss A faced black sun/black hole entity swoops across the screen.

Stingers

The stingers category is represented by a "!?" and colored red.

Jump* A man shouting "Whoo!" in a high-pitched voice. Its icon is a shoe lifted up by a spring.[3]
Honk Honk* The clown horn noise from Mario Paint.[3]
Punch* A punching noise. Its icon is a boxing glove.[3]
Oink An oinking sound effect that also causes the pig stamp from Mario Paint to pop up from wherever it was triggered.[1][3]
Kuh-thunk! A taiko drum sound.[3]
Beep! Causes the screen's picture to break up slightly as a beeping sound plays. Its icon is a television.[4][5]
Ninja Attack! An effect based on The Mysterious Murasame Castle in which Takamaru's and enemy ninjas' sprites from said game move through the screen while the game's main theme replaces the level music. Its icon is a shuriken.[1][3]
Zap! A manga-style visual composed of white flares linked by electric discharges, accompanied by a piano tune.[1][3]

The reactions category is represented by split arrows and colored green.

The animations category is represented by sparkles and colored purple.

Traditional A confetti effect that plays while paper lanterns bounce on the upper part of the screen. Its icon is a lantern with a cherry blossom.[1][3]
Electric Guitar A rock "boom" visual. Its icon is an electric guitar.[1][6][3]
Twisty Turny A record-scratching sound effect. Its icon is a squid.[4]
Woozy Another record-scratching sound effect. Its icon is an octopus.[4]
Flash

Music

The music category is represented by a vinyl record and colored blue.

Bonus Music* Plays bonus area music, which changes depending on the course's style. In the Super Mario 3D World style, "Slot Machine," the Lucky House theme (which in turn is an arrangement of the character select theme from Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic and Super Mario Bros. 2) plays. Its icon is a Mushroom.[3]
Heartbeat* Heartbeat noises. Its icon is a blue heart.[3]
Silence* Mutes the game's music. Its icon is Undodog with a surgical mask.
Boss Music* Plays boss music, which changes depending on the theme. Super Mario 3D World courses play "Motley Bossblob," a recurring boss theme from the same game. Its icon is Bowser Jr.'s emblem.[4]
Final Boss Plays final boss music, which changes depending on the theme. Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 3 courses play the final boss theme from the latter game; Super Mario World courses play its respective final boss theme; New Super Mario Bros. U courses play the second phase of the final boss theme; and Super Mario 3D World courses play "The Great Tower Showdown 1," the first part of Meowser's boss theme from the same game. Its icon is Bowser's emblem.[4]
Super Mario Kart Plays the Mario Circuit theme from Super Mario Kart. Its icon is the Super Famicom logo, which appears briefly when the effect is triggered.[7][3]
