Noshi,[1] or Nossie,[2] is the name of a species of one-horned sauropods similar to Apatosaurus first seen in the Dino Dino Jungle course of Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, where the light blue one serves as one of the main obstacles of the course. While the Nintendo Official Guidebook and site of Mario Kart: Double Dash!! only use the term Nossie to refer to the light blue one,[3][4] internal data indicates that the red and yellow one found in the course are Nossies as well.[5] The species was never given a specific English name, it was originally referred to using the lowercase generic terms dino and brontosaurus in the Prima and Nintendo Power guides of Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, respectively, and subsequently referred to using the lowercase term dinosaur in the Prima guide and internal data[6] of Mario Kart 7.[7]

History

Nossies first appear in the Dino Dino Jungle track of Mario Kart: Double Dash!!. There the light blue one mainly acts as a hazard for the racers passing near it in the canyon, being able to stomp them with its feet. It can also be met when passing on the wooden bridge that crosses the canyon, where it is able to make the karts spin with its head. Additionally, two Nossies, one colored red and the other colored yellow, appear moving through the lake where the branching boardwalk lies.

The light blue Nossie reappears in the GCN Dino Dino Jungle track of Mario Kart 7, in the same place where it is found in the original course. The main difference is that in this course, this Nossie stretches its neck, making it an obstacle for the drivers gliding above the wooden bridge.

The light blue Nossie, with its name now romanized as Noshi,[1] appears again in the GCN Dino Dino Jungle track of Mario Kart Tour. Its role is mostly similar to its Mario Kart 7 appearance, but if a racer lands on it, they can perform a Jump Boost. It also appears in N64 Koopa Troopa Beach T and N64 Koopa Troopa Beach R/T, while multiple light blue Noshis (likely referencing the kaiju) appear in Tokyo Blur R/T. Noshi was used as the landmark for the Jungle Tour.
