Inky Piranha Plants are ink-spitting variants of Piranha Plants that first appear in Super Mario 3D Land. They resemble normal Piranha Plants, but they are black instead of red, have ink going down their stalks, and can spit ink to cover the player's screen, similar to a Blooper in the Mario Kart series.
History[edit]
Super Mario 3D Land[edit]
Inky Piranha Plants appear mainly in the underground levels. They spit ink out of their mouths to cover the screen. If the player blows into the microphone, though, the ink will be blown off, removing it from the screen. They can be defeated by any attack method, just like a normal Piranha Plant.
Mario Tennis Open[edit]
Inky Piranha Plants appear in Mario Tennis Open. In Ink Showdown, a revamped version of the Piranha Challenge from Mario Tennis, they shoot tennis balls to the player, as well as ink blobs that will block their screen making it harder to see.

Inky Piranha Plants appear as background enemies in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. Inky Piranha Plants do not appear in the field due to their nature of a background enemy, and only randomly appear during battles against Fire Bros and/or Flaming Antasmatons in the later segments of Neo Bowser Castle.
In battle, Inky Piranha Plants will spit ink at the screen, just as in Super Mario 3D Land, making it difficult to see and avoid enemy attacks. Unlike most background enemies, it cannot be brought into the foreground whatsoever, and the use of a single Taunt Ball will simply knock it unconscious, rendering it unable to shoot ink for several turns. Once again, unlike most other background enemies who are defeated through use of a Taunt Ball, Inky Piranha Plants can be defeated if a total of three Taunt Balls are thrown at one by either Bro.
After an Inky Piranha Plant spits ink on the screen, it can be cleared off quickly by blowing into the 3DS microphone.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Inky Piranha Plants (just called Inky Piranhas) are mentioned briefly by Viridi during Palutena's Guidance dialogue for Piranha Plant.
Mario Kart Tour[edit]
Inky Piranha Plants are obstacles in Mario Kart Tour. They appear in two courses, Bangkok Rush and Madrid Drive 3R/T. In the latter course, they also appear on the back of trucks. In this game, they spit out ink piles, which act similarly to oil slicks. If the player is hit by the ink, they will spin out and ink will cover the screen. The player can obtain points by hitting them with Bob-ombs or a Super Horn. A large Inky Piranha Plant appears in the R/T variant of DS Peach Gardens, replacing the Big Piranha Plant that is usually located there.
In Tour Bangkok Rush's appearance in the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass, Inky Piranha Plants are replaced with small Piranha Plants.

The contemporaneous name for each language is listed first. Subsequent names are listed in chronological order for each language, from oldest to newest, and have the media with which they are associated in the "Notes" column. Names exclusive to localizations of the Super Mario Bros. Encyclopedia are not prioritized due to concerns about circular reporting, and are only listed first for their respective languages if they are the only ones available.
