Hop (move)
- This article is about the move in the Mario Kart series. For the character known as "Hop Koopa" in the cartoons, see Iggy Koopa.
Hopping (referred to as a Mini-Jump in Mario Kart: Super Circuit) appears in the Mario Kart series as a technique usable by karts, bikes, and ATVs, barring Mario Kart: Double Dash!! All drivers can hop by pressing . In Super Mario Kart, both the
and
buttons are used to hop (hopping in Mario Kart Wii works only with the Drift option set to Manual). Hopping is used mainly for drifting, but vehicles can also hop over small gaps. Hopping has several additional functions in other games. Hopping in Mario Kart 64 can let players use shortcuts. In Mario Kart DS, hopping when going over a Dash Panel ramp allows the player to perform a High Jump. Hopping off a ramp (by pressing
) in Mario Kart 7 allows the player to perform a Jump Boost, which gives a small boost upon landing. Hopping in Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe functions as it does in Mario Kart 7. In Mario Kart Tour, Jump Boosts are performed automatically without the use of hopping. In Mario Kart World, hopping can be used to initiate Charge Jumps; however, hopping on its own (without using it to initiate a drift, perform a trick or perform a Charge Jump) is considerably less effective than in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
In Mario Kart 8, there is an exploit in which the player can hop repeatedly from left to right to gain extra speed from a boost. This does not apply in 200cc mode, and it was fully patched out in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
In The Super Mario Bros. Movie, while driving with Toad, Princess Peach, Donkey Kong, Cranky Kong, and the Kong army on Rainbow Road, Mario performs hops in his kart in order to start drifting and therefore use Mini-Turbos. He does a hop after initially landing on Rainbow Road, allowing himself to drift and use a single Mini-Turbo, just before a conversation between him and Peach. When the team splits up, Mario is pursued by the Koopa General's bulldozer-like kart. Mario uses three drifts and Ultra Mini-Turbos to stay ahead of the maw on the Koopa General's kart, but Mario does not hop to initiate any of those drifts. Lastly, he hops to drift in order to charge up and use a final Ultra Mini-Turbo, launching himself onto a distant portion of the road. The Koopa General is seemingly unable to pursue Mario directly, and instead he fires Bullet Bills at Mario.
