“We used a twin violin line to get a sense of dynamism across. The number of playable characters doubles, then triples and quadruples. The hectic, cheerful rhythm adds to the fun, whether you're playing alone or with others.”
Liner notes in the Super Mario 3D World Original Soundtrack

"Double Cherry Pass"[1][2] is a musical theme composed by Mahito Yokota for Super Mario 3D World, where it plays in the levels Double Cherry Pass, Clear Pipe Cruise, and Big Bounce Byway.

Composition[edit]

"Double Cherry Pass" is an upbeat piece that heavily incorporates the use of notes or short sequences of notes repeating twice, evoking a musical equivalent to the effect of the Double Cherry. For example, the intro features four instances of the same melody, which can be divided into two phrases, each repeating the melody twice. A cuíca provides additional rhythm to the piece.

History[edit]

Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[edit]

Super Mario 3D World marks the first appearance of "Double Cherry Pass", and it returns in the Nintendo Switch port, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, for the same purposes. It is also included in the official Super Mario 3D World Original Soundtrack album.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker[edit]

Exclusively in the Wii U version of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, the original version of "Double Cherry Pass" plays in Clear Pipe Cruise.

Mario Kart World[edit]

In Mario Kart World, a lounge/Shibuya-kei arrangement of "Double Cherry Pass" can play in Free Roam during the day. This arrangement features a slower tempo, and the lead melody is played in unison by a Vox Continental organ (a model that was popular in the 1960s) and a flute, with a violin joining later. The second loop features solos by the organ and the violin. A brass section, harpsichord, and acoustic guitar are used as accompaniment, while a string section, vibraphone, and glockenspiel are used for accents.
