Chapter 1 of Super Donkey Kong (Manga Boys Comics Special)

えたバナナをもどせ! (Bring Back the Missing Banana!)

Donkey Kong is looking for Diddy Kong when Diddy suddenly jumps out of a tree, startling him. Donkey Kong yells angrily at him and orders him to guard the banana hoard that very night. Later, Diddy Kong is guarding the bananas while a rainstorm rages outside. Although he complains about DK’s attitude toward him and the rain, he soon finds comfort in the bananas, praising their nutritional value. However, outside the cave he hears an unfamiliar voice, so he hides. It turns out to be an army of klumps led by one with a scar over his right eye, who have come to steal the bananas. The Klump in charge notices Diddy’s tail and spots him. Klump tries to capture him, but Diddy manages to dodge him and the rest of the klumps; However, he ends up getting trapped in a DK barrel, allowing the klumps to steal the bananas. Before retreating, the leader orders another Klump to take the barrel away.

The next morning, DK wakes up when he is suddenly hit, which confuses him. Cranky Kong appears and reveals that he was the one who hit him, which angers DK. Cranky scolds DK and tells him to check the banana hoard, showing that the bananas have been stolen, as well as the boot prints and Diddy’s footprints on the floor, noting that Diddy has disappeared. Cranky scolds DK again for being irresponsible. DK becomes determined and decides to go retrieve his bananas and find Diddy Kong, but Cranky ends up mocking him, and starts reminiscing about his youth. Fed up with listening to Cranky’s story, DK decides to leave and set out on his quest.

On his way, DK comes to the edge of a cliff and spots a cave where two kritters are talking; he doesn't notice a Necky behind him, who throws a rock at him, causing him to fall. DK lands on a Slippa, presumably killing it, and as he gets up, an Army attacks him, causing him to stumble, DK spots a banana on the ground and figures he’s on the right track, but then he hears some murmuring coming from a barrel that’s moving. DK taps on the barrel and asks if anyone’s inside, causing the murmuring to get louder. DK gets nervous and throws the barrel away, breaking it and revealing that Diddy Kong was inside. Diddy gets mad at DK, but DK is glad to see he’s okay. Once the duo reunites, they decide to continue their search. However, DK doesn’t know which way to go, so he asks Diddy for ideas. Diddy suggests following the trail of bananas on the ground. They both follow the trail, but it ends up leading them to Rambi, who was eating the bananas. DK and Diddy get mad at him for eating their clue. Rambi, realizing they were their bananas, tells them he was hungry and found those bananas on the ground, so he couldn’t resist. He offers to guide them to where the Kremlings are, which DK accepts, and they set off with Diddy riding on Rambi’s back and DK following behind. Once they arrive at the Kremlings’ hideout, they ambush them. Rambi charges at the kritters while DK punch them. The trio enters the cave, and even though Rambi warns him to be careful, DK ends up crashing into Very Gnawty, making him angry. Donkey Kong attacks him, but his punches have no effect, and Very Gnawty ends up hitting him with just one hand.

うみったあおゆう姿 (A Majestic Blue Figure Encountered at Sea)

After seeing that DK had been defeated, Diddy wonders if he and Rambi alone can defeat Very Gnawty, but when he sees Very Gnawty mocking him, he is filled with determination and decides to attack alongside Rambi. Very Gnawty performs a spinning attack, defeating both of them. Donkey Kong wakes up and sees Diddy and Rambi on the ground, which enrages him, so he heads straight for Very Gnawty, jumps up, and kicks him in the face, stunning him, and then jumps on his head. Diddy regains his composure and attacks Very Gnawty in the same way DK did, finishing him off. Rambi flatters Diddy by telling him he’s awesome, causing Diddy to get cocky so he starts claiming that he could defeat the Kremlings all by himself, that he'll be popular with the girls, and that he'll become the "King of the Jungle"—which makes Donkey Kong angry, so he punches him and scolds him for what he said. Diddy, for his part, also gets angry at DK and tells him it was wrong to hit him from behind. DK tells him he’s become too cocky, and the two start arguing, but they’re interrupted by Rambi, and DK apologizes for his behavior. Just then, the trio feels a tremor in the cave along with several falling rocks (some hitting Rambi on the head). DK realizes the cave is collapsing, so they must head for the exit by following the trail of bananas on the ground. Just as they manage to reach the cave’s exit, Rambi stops abruptly, causing Diddy to fall off his back and DK to crash into him. DK scolds him for stopping, to which Rambi replies that they’re on the edge of a cliff and the ocean lies before them, DK and Diddy decide to continue their search at sea, saying goodbye to Rambi and thanking him for his help. Rambi feels bad about having to say goodbye, but just as he’s about to turn back, he realizes that the cave’s exit has been sealed by rocks, preventing him from returning.

While they are swimming, Diddy expresses his concern to DK about Rambi, telling him that Rambi can’t get back home because the exit has been sealed off. DK replies that Rambi can swim back, to which Diddy angrily retorts that Rambi doesn’t know how to swim and that’s why he didn’t come with them. DK tells him not to worry about Rambi because he’s strong, meanwhile, we see Rambi looking worried because he can't make his way back to the jungle on his own. Back with the duo, Diddy notices a trail of bananas, so they decide to follow it, but both notice that something passed right by them. DK asks Diddy if it was him, to which he replies that he didn’t do anything. Suddenly, a Chomps Jr. appears behind them and chases after them. DK and Diddy try to escape by swimming, but the Chomps Jr. manages to bite DK’s butt. Both spot a rock on the surface with an animal crate on it. Upon reaching the rock, they break open the crate, freeing Enguarde. DK and Diddy have no idea who he is, but he realizes they were both chased by something and assures them he can handle it. Enguarde defeats the Chomps Jr., introduces himself to the duo, and asks them their names. DK and Diddy introduce themselves, and Enguarde tells them that the Kremlings were the ones who locked him in the crate. DK asks him if he knows where they are, to which Enguarde replies that he does. Diddy asks him to guide them so they can get their bananas back, Enguarde agrees to help them. On their way, they’re attacked by a Clambo and chased by several Chomps Jr. and Croctopuses. Enguarde decides to head to the surface, and just as they surface, they encounter a giant wave with Funky Kong surfing on it. Funky asks them what they’re doing there and notices Enguarde, whom he recognizes. DK asks how they know each other, and Funky replies that they’re friends and that he’s like an "older brother" to Enguarde, while Diddy adds that this explains why they speak so similarly. Funky tells them he’s already heard about the banana theft and will help them get them back, but DK tells him it’s not necessary for him to get involved, so Funky leaves, not before telling them that the Kremlings are in the forest. DK and Diddy arrive at the forest and enter a cave where they encounter Master Necky, who attacks them by throwing coconuts at them. Although DK initially had trouble dodging them, Diddy manages to gather the coconuts and gives them to DK, who starts throwing them at Master Necky, hitting him in the mouth. DK takes advantage of the fact that he’s choking, grabs him by the neck, and throws him far away, while Diddy grabs a coconut and throws it at Necky, hitting him in the face. Master Necky is defeated, and the duo celebrates their victory.

Notes

  • The manga features animals that never appear in the game, namely a rooster, an owl[4], a goat, a bear, a wolf, a turtle, a bull, a hippopotamus, and a pair of giraffes.[5]
    • Interestingly, there were plans to introduce an owl into the game as a animal friend.[6]
  • Lady is portrayed as a princess who looks very similar to Princess Peach.[7]
  • There were plans to produce a second volume that would adapt Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, as indicated on the dust jacket and back cover of the volume, as well as in a comment by author Anna Kouya[8][9]. However, the story was never continued.[10]
