A Star Wand[1][2] is an item that Rosalina uses. It has a silver handle that ends on a yellow outline of a star. Rosalina's Star Wand allows her to lift objects and other characters into the air or draw such entities toward her. Similarly, the Star Wand can toss these entities away. It has a number of other powers. Usually, when Rosalina uses a Star Wand, the star either sparkles or glows blue. The exact effect depends on the game and what that wand is being used for, and sometimes there might be no visual effect on the wand itself. Equally so, something being suspended in the air by a Star Wand may or may not glow.

Rosalina is normally always depicted holding a Star Wand, but many games do exclude it. The Mario Kart series and the Mario Party series are examples of series where Rosalina does not hold a Star Wand, and Super Mario 3D World is an example of a game where Rosalina does not have a Star Wand within a series (the Super Mario series) that she usually does. Since a Star Wand is a ubiquitous part of Rosalina's design, this article focuses less on the presence of a Star Wand and more upon what a Star Wand does.

Forms of Rosalina, such as Fire Rosalina, are usually not depicted with a Star Wand, though this might be because Rosalina usually has different forms only in games where she does not hold a Star Wand. Baby Rosalina and Mini Rosalina are also traditionally not depicted with a Star Wand, though in the former case, this may be because Baby Rosalina usually appears in games where Rosalina does not hold a Star Wand. Dr. Mario World, a game where Dr. Rosalina uses a Star Wand, has Dr. Baby Rosalina use an oversized yellow hand mirror with a star-shaped ending that appears to be a loose equivalency to a Star Wand.

History[edit]

Mario Golf series[edit]

In Rosalina's appearances in the Mario Golf series, she does not hold her current golf club like other characters. Instead, she levitates her current golf club using a Star Wand. The handle of the golf club glows. When she swings her Star Wand, it causes the golf club to swing. Rosalina appears in Mario Golf: World Tour and Mario Golf: Super Rush. In the latter game, Rosalina's Special Shot is Shooting Star. In it, Rosalina uses her Star Wand to summon the Lumas that empower the ball, a process where the wand glows blue, then swings the wand to swing her golf club.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

In Rosalina & Luma's appearance in the Super Smash Bros. series, some of Rosalina's attacks have her use a Star Wand. Rosalina swings it at opponents for her each portion of her neutral attack, with the portion of the attack used by repeatedly pressing the attack button while at least one opponent is within range specifically having her twirl it at the target. Rosalina's grab attack is to hit opponents with a Star Wand, and all four of her throws have her toss the opponent with her wand. If Rosalina lands on her back and chooses to get up by attacking, she swings a Star Wand at opponents both in front and behind her. Two of Rosalina & Luma's special moves involve a Star Wand. Luma Shot has Rosalina charge up her Star Wand, then swing it to launch Luma as a projectile. If Luma is separated from Rosalina, such as through the use of Luma Shot, using Luma Shot has Rosalina swing her wand to pull Luma back to her. Luma Shot makes Rosalina's Star Wand glow blue. Star Bits has Rosalina wave a Star Wand to command Luma to shoot three Star Bits forward. The wand does not inflict damage during this attack. Lastly, Rosalina's side taunt has her wave her wand to beckon opponents while her down taunt has her twirl the wand while gradually raising it into the air. Rosalina & Luma appear in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, there are custom versions of special moves. Luma Shot's custom versions are Luma Warp and Power Luma Shot, while Star Bits custom variations are Floaty Star Bit and Shooting Star Bit. Custom special moves share most the animations of the base special move, so most of them do not change Rosalina's Star Wand's role in the attack. Luma Warp does, as instead of launching Luma, it makes Luma teleport forward a set distance. Rosalina & Luma's Final Smash, Power Star, has Rosalina use her Star Wand to create a large Power Star. The wand glows blue as this happens.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Rosalina's neutral air attack has her spin around while holding out her Star Wand to hit opponents. Luma glows blue while Luma Shot is being charged, and leaves a blue trail when Luma Shot is used to bring them back to Rosalina. Since custom special moves are removed for most characters in the game, Luma Warp, Power Luma Shot, Floaty Star Bit, and Shooting Star Bit are all not in the game. Rosalina & Luma's Final Smash is changed to Grand Star, but it is mostly the same move as Power Star save for the attack creating a large Grand Star.

Super Mario Maker[edit]

In Super Mario Maker, if Mario becomes the Rosalina version of Costume Mario, then holding +Control Pad up makes him raise the Star Wand she holds.

Mario Sports Superstars[edit]

In Mario Sports Superstars, golf is one of the included sports. This game's golf implementation is based directly on Mario Golf: World Tour, and as such Rosalina again uses her Star Wand to wield her current golf club.

Dr. Mario World[edit]

In Dr. Mario World, Dr. Rosalina's skill has her point the wand forward without any graphical effects In Stage Mode, an animation is played over the stage where the wand is waved. This animation includes sparkles. In Stage Mode the skull allows capsules and half-capsules that have landed and locked into place to be moved until a timer for the overall skill elapses. Capsules under this effect change from solid colors to translucent, in the same way a falling capsule does compared to a capsule that is static or being actively moved by the player. In the update Dr. Rosalina was added in, this state this skill creates only lasts for seven seconds. It was changed in version 1.4.0 to last for fifteen seconds. In Versus Mode, it encases a number of viruses in a random one of the following containers: ice, bubbles, blocks, dust clouds, or clouds. All viruses affected by a single use of this skill will be affected in the same way. The number of viruses this skill affects depends on Dr. Rosalina's level.

Mario Kart Tour[edit]

Mario Kart Tour follows from most games in the Mario Kart series in that Rosalina does not have a Star Wand. However, Rosalina (Halloween) has a Star Wand. She waves her wand during all two out of her three animations for performing Jump Boosts, and both of them have Rosalina's Star Wand emit sparkles.
