The '''Lightning Cup''' is a cup in the [[Mario Kart (series)|''Mario Kart'' series]]. Its first appearance is in ''[[Mario Kart: Super Circuit]]'' where it was placed between the [[Flower Cup]] and [[Star Cup]]. It is absent in ''[[Mario Kart: Double Dash!!]]'', but it makes a reappearance in ''[[Mario Kart DS]]'', ''[[Mario Kart Wii]]'', ''[[Mario Kart 7]]'', and ''[[Mario Kart 8]]'' as a cup with tracks from past ''Mario Kart'' games. The emblem of the cup is the [[Thunderbolt (item)|Thunderbolt]]. It features tracks from the previous cups: the [[Flower Cup]], the Lightning Cup (''Mario Kart: Super Circuit''), the [[Star Cup]], and the [[Special Cup]]. The length and difficulty of the courses in the cup tend to be on par with those in the Special Cup. As of ''Mario Kart 7'', the final track of the Lightning Cup is a past Rainbow Road. The table below lists every track in the Lightning Cup by course order and game installment.
The '''Lightning Cup''' (referred to as the '''Thunder Cup''' in ''[[Mario Power Tennis]]'' and in the ''[[Mario Kart: Super Circuit]]'' and ''[[Mario Kart 7]]'' instruction manuals) is a [[cup]] in the [[Mario Kart (series)|''Mario Kart'' series]], as well as ''Mario Power Tennis''. Its first appearance is in ''Mario Kart: Super Circuit'', in which it is placed between the [[Flower Cup]] and [[Star Cup]], appearing as the third cup of that game. It is absent in ''[[Mario Kart: Double Dash!!]]'', but has since appeared in most ''Mario Kart'' titles since ''[[Mario Kart DS]]'', usually as the eighth and final cup, most frequently exclusively featuring [[classic course]]s as the fourth and last retro cup overall. In ''Mario Kart 8'' and ''[[Mario Kart 8 Deluxe]]'', it is the eighth cup overall; however, due to the four DLC cups (the [[Egg Cup]], the [[Triforce Cup]], the [[Crossing Cup]], and the [[Bell Cup]]) taking place after the Lightning Cup, the Bell Cup is actually the last cup overall in ''Mario Kart 8'', and in ''Mario Kart 8 Deluxe'', the [[Spiny Cup]] is actually the last cup overall due to the ''[[Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass|Booster Course Pass]]''. In ''[[Mario Kart World]]'', it is the seventh cup in the game and features a [[new course]].

==Courses==
It typically features courses from the [[Star Cup]] and the [[Special Cup]]. Outside of ''Mario Kart World'', the length and difficulty of the courses in this cup tend to be on par with those in the [[Special Cup]]. Both ''Mario Kart 7'' and ''[[Mario Kart 8]]'' finish the Lightning Cup with a [[Rainbow Road]] from a past game, akin to the Special Cup's last course being a [[New course|new]] Rainbow Road. As the name suggests, the emblem of the cup is [[Lightning]].

==Trivia==
==Notes==
*In the ''Mario Kart 7'' manual, the Lightning Cup is called the '''Thunder Cup'''.
*The Lightning Cup is the only cup in ''Mario Kart: Super Circuit'' to not feature a [[Bowser's Castle#Mario Kart series|Bowser's Castle]] course.
*The ''Mario Kart Wii''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s Lightning Cup Trophy uses a [[Thunder Cloud]] instead of the Thunderbolt.
*Excluding cups introduced as DLC, ''Mario Kart 7''{{'}}s Lightning Cup is the only retro cup in the series not to have at least one course from ''[[Mario Kart 64]]'', and the only Lightning Cup to feature multiple courses from the [[Special Cup]].
*[[Sky Garden]] is the only course to appear in the same cup in two different games. This is due to the Lightning Cup being a nitro cup in ''Mario Kart: Super Circuit'' (where Sky Garden first appeared in) and a retro cup in ''Mario Kart DS'' (where it appeared as a retro course)
*The Lightning Cup from ''[[Mario Kart: Super Circuit]]'' is one of three cups in the series to have all its courses return together in another ''Mario Kart'' game, as all of its tracks reappear in ''[[Mario Kart Tour]]''. The other two cups are the [[Star Cup]] from ''[[Mario Kart Wii]]'', which has all of its courses available in ''[[Mario Kart 8 Deluxe]]'' as a result of the ''[[Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass|Booster Course Pass]]'', and the [[Mushroom Cup]] from ''[[Mario Kart 7]]'', which also has all of its courses return in ''Tour''.
*As of ''Mario Kart 8'', it is the only retro cup to not have at least one course from ''Mario Kart 64'', as ''Mario Kart 7'' did not include one.
**Additionally, its courses were added to ''Tour'' in reverse chronological order compared to the original cup. Sunset Wilds debuted in 2020's [[Sunset Tour]], Cheep-Cheep Island debuted in the [[Summer Tour (2021)|2021 Summer Tour]], Sky Garden debuted in 2022's [[Sky Tour]], and Luigi Circuit debuted in the [[Mario vs. Luigi Tour (2023)|2023 Mario vs. Luigi Tour]]. This situation also applies to the Star Cup from ''Wii''.
*Mario Kart 8 did not include a course from snes, or gcn.

The Lightning Cup logo in Mario Kart 8.

The Lightning Cup (referred to as the Thunder Cup in Mario Power Tennis and in the Mario Kart: Super Circuit and Mario Kart 7 instruction manuals) is a cup in the Mario Kart series, as well as Mario Power Tennis. Its first appearance is in Mario Kart: Super Circuit, in which it is placed between the Flower Cup and Star Cup, appearing as the third cup of that game. It is absent in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, but has since appeared in most Mario Kart titles since Mario Kart DS, usually as the eighth and final cup, most frequently exclusively featuring classic courses as the fourth and last retro cup overall. In Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, it is the eighth cup overall; however, due to the four DLC cups (the Egg Cup, the Triforce Cup, the Crossing Cup, and the Bell Cup) taking place after the Lightning Cup, the Bell Cup is actually the last cup overall in Mario Kart 8, and in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the Spiny Cup is actually the last cup overall due to the Booster Course Pass. In Mario Kart World, it is the seventh cup in the game and features a new course.

It typically features courses from the Star Cup and the Special Cup. Outside of Mario Kart World, the length and difficulty of the courses in this cup tend to be on par with those in the Special Cup. Both Mario Kart 7 and Mario Kart 8 finish the Lightning Cup with a Rainbow Road from a past game, akin to the Special Cup's last course being a new Rainbow Road. As the name suggests, the emblem of the cup is Lightning.

Copa Trueno[?] Thunder Cup Mario Kart: Super Circuit European instruction booklet

Notes

  • The Lightning Cup is the only cup in Mario Kart: Super Circuit to not feature a Bowser's Castle course.
  • Excluding cups introduced as DLC, Mario Kart 7's Lightning Cup is the only retro cup in the series not to have at least one course from Mario Kart 64, and the only Lightning Cup to feature multiple courses from the Special Cup.
  • The Lightning Cup from Mario Kart: Super Circuit is one of three cups in the series to have all its courses return together in another Mario Kart game, as all of its tracks reappear in Mario Kart Tour. The other two cups are the Star Cup from Mario Kart Wii, which has all of its courses available in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as a result of the Booster Course Pass, and the Mushroom Cup from Mario Kart 7, which also has all of its courses return in Tour.
    • Additionally, its courses were added to Tour in reverse chronological order compared to the original cup. Sunset Wilds debuted in 2020's Sunset Tour, Cheep-Cheep Island debuted in the 2021 Summer Tour, Sky Garden debuted in 2022's Sky Tour, and Luigi Circuit debuted in the 2023 Mario vs. Luigi Tour. This situation also applies to the Star Cup from Wii.
