History

Mario is Missing!

Along with New York City, Rio de Janeiro, Tokyo and Cairo, it is in the last set of cities Luigi has to visit in the game Mario is Missing!. Famous landmarks in London include the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey and Big Ben, all of which can be visited in the game. Koopa Troopas stole artifacts from each of the landmarks - the Crown Jewels from the Tower, a Shakespeare Bust from Westminster Abbey and Big Ben's Minute Hand - and Luigi has to find and return them to the respective landmarks.

In Mario's Time Machine, Mario travels back in time to London circa 1595 to return the stolen Crown of the then-reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth I. However, Mario only enters the queen's palace, and does not explore any of London. While there, he also talks to one of the queen's servants, one of the queen's handmaidens, and Francis Drake. Mario later travels back in time to 1831 to return a Magnet to Michael Faraday, talking to Sarah Barnard, Charles-Gaspard de la Rive, and a boy who claims to be an heir to the throne of England while there. Later still, Mario travels back in time to 1843, visiting one of London's streets to return Charles Dickens' Inkwell. There, he talks to a grumpy banker, a poor orphan, and Charles's wife, Catherine Dickens. In all three time periods, he leaves the city after returning the important item to its respective owner.

In Mario Kart Tour, there are three new courses that are based on London. The first of the three is London Loop, which debuted in and served as the signature course of the London Tour. A second version named London Loop 2 debuted in the Baby Rosalina Tour. A third version known as London Loop 3 was later introduced in the 2021 Halloween Tour.

Some of the landmarks in London can be seen in the courses, including the Admiralty Arch, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, Charing Cross, The Gherkin, Leadenhall Market, London City Hall, London Eye, Nelson's Column, The Shard, Tower Bridge, Tower of London, Trafalgar Square, St Paul's Cathedral, Victoria Memorial, and The Walkie Talkie.

A picture of London can be seen on a page of the Flybrary Book glider.

DIC cartoons

London was also referenced in The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3. During the events of "Reptiles in the Rose Garden", it was mentioned by Luigi as one of the cities that Bowser was planning to attack after he succeeded in taking over the United States of America. However, Mario and Luigi stopped the Koopa Troop before this could happen.

In The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, the city of Victoria appears to be based on London.
