First appearance Mario is Missing! (1993)

Mayor McCarthy is a character exclusive to the CD-ROM Deluxe version of Mario is Missing!, appearing as the fictional mayor of Marrakech. Like all other mayors in the game, she contacts Luigi via videophone upon his arrival in the city, as well as after all of the artifacts in the area have been returned to their rightful locations. In the first call, Mayor McCarthy states that the city lost four major landmarks since the day before.

Once all of the artifacts have been recovered, Luigi receives a second call from Mayor McCarthy, who thanks him for saving the city from the Koopas and wishes him luck on the rest of his adventure.

Her counterpart in the DOS version is Mayor I. V. Gottserve. The voice of McCarthy refers to herself as "I. V. Gottserve" despite the game's text referring to "McCarthy".

Like several of the other mayors, Mayor McCarthy is named after someone who worked on Mario is Missing!; she shares a name with Pat McCarthy, who is credited as Additional Programming.

Quotes[edit]

  • "This is Mayor McCarthy. It's time to take off the gloves, Luigi. As you can read in the papers, this city has lost FOUR major landmarks since yesterday. The natives are getting restless, the tourists are testy and I'm up for re-election next month. Evidence is scarce, but I have a sinking feeling Bowser is behind it all."
  • "Luigi. You've saved our city from the Koopas, and the people are grateful. Thank you, good luck and good bye! And say hi to Mario when you find him!"
