Gary and Jason are two Hammer Brothers appearing in the Super Mario Bros. comic "The Kingdom Enquirer."
As Toad tries to jump on a Jump Block to propel himself into the sky, he is approached by Gary and Jason. As Toad panickingly looks through his Reporter's Handbook, they deduce that he is a reporter and begin to tell him of odd incidents involving them; Gary begins by telling him that Jason once ate all of the Apook Corporation's entire rations of slug bars and became sick, though Toad finds this too silly. Jason then tells him that Gary once fell asleep on guard and let Mario slip right pass him. As more Koopa Troopas appear, he explains that Toad is writing a story for them, to which he responds that he is not, explaining that they are too boring.
Gary's name is likely a reference to American actor Gary Cooper, while Jason's name may be a reference to American actor Jason Bateman.
