Moonfungie is a surfer Mushroom who appears in the Super Mario Bros. comic "Beauty and the Beach." He lives on an island with many other surfer Mushrooms.

When Mario and his friend's sailboat washes up onto his island, Princess Toadstool comments that she should have put on a "drip-dry dress" this morning, with Moonfungie mentioning that this is true, explaining that one can catch a cold in wet clothes. He then introduces himself to her and her friends, explaining that there are some dry clothes in one of the shacks on the island, adding that they try to follow the boss's dress code. Toad wonders who this boss is, but he merely tells everyone else to change their clothes as well, explaining that no "drips" are allowed on the island.

After changing into some swimwear, Mario and his friends point out the flaws in their attire, though Moonfungie mentions that they look fine, telling them they should get to work. A group of Mushrooms then run by them, explaining that they are throwing bombs into the volcano at the center of their island to make it hotter, as their boss mentioned that, once the volcano is hot enough, it will scare away the Trouters, which had chomped on their boat earlier in the comic. As Moonfungie begins praising the boss, explaining Mario and his friends will love them, the boss appears, revealing himself to be King Koopa, now under the alias of "Ka-Hoopa."

Later, after Mario and his friends stop the volcano from erupting, Moonfungie and the other Mushrooms apologize to them, explaining that they let King Koopa trick them because of their love for surfing. Moonfungie then mentions that they learned that there is something that there is something more important in life: jacuzzis, with him and the other surfer Mushrooms swimming in the newly-created jacuzzi at the top of the volcano.

Naming[edit]

Moonfungie's name is a portmanteau of "Moondoggie," a character from the novel Gidget, The Little Girl with Big Ideas, and "fungi."
