Not to be confused with Boomsday Machine.
“And at the top of the planet, they built the biggest cannon ever! It could destroy the universe! They called it... the Boomsday Weapon! To power it, they needed the most powerful princess in the universe! And when they had drained all her power, and the weapon was ready, they went planet by planet, destroying all those who disrespected them! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! Until they danced on the ashes of the universe, and reigned supreme!”

The Boomsday Weapon is an enormous energy cannon on the top of Planet Bowser in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. It is named after the Boomsday Machine, a boss from Super Mario Galaxy 2 piloted by Bowser Jr. Like the planet itself, it was created by Bowser Jr. inspired by a puppet theater bedtime story Bowser often told him as a baby. It is capable of destroying entire galaxies, with Bowser Jr. hoping to use it to destroy "all who disrespect them", starting with the Mushroom Kingdom, so they can force the universe to submit to them. To activate, it requires Rosalina to be held in a chamber in the middle of a huge gyroscope-like structure inside, siphoning her cosmic power until she fully disintegrates into energy. It is the site of the climax of the film.

During the climax, Princess Peach makes her way to the core while Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi battle Dry Bowser and Wonder Bowser Jr. Peach at first tries to destroy the chamber where Rosalina is being drained using her parasol, but it eventually gets knocked away. Eventually she recalls a childhood memory of her and Rosalina terraforming a planet in their youth by touching their hands together, and manages to make Rosalina respond. Rosalina uses the last of her energy to reach for the chamber's wall opposite Peach, allowing the energy to spark between them, destroying the weapon from the inside just before it is able to fire, restoring Rosalina's energy, and terraforming Planet Bowser.

Notes[edit]

  • The chamber where Rosalina is held bears some slight visual similarities to the glass planets that contain Grand Stars where Bowser is fought in Super Mario Galaxy; notably, the windows on it resemble the blue glass circles Bowser needs to be tricked into stomping to damage him.
  • The location of the Boomsday Weapon on Planet Bowser bears a slight resemblance the position of Wonder Bowser at the top of Castle Bowser in Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
  • The Boomsday Weapon's overall role as a massive, planet-destroying blaster is similar to that of the Death Star from the original Star Wars.
