The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is an animated adventure comedy film produced by Nintendo in collaboration with Universal Pictures and Illumination and co-produced by Super Mario franchise creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination co-founder Chris Meledandri. It is a direct sequel to the 2023 film The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and is the fourth feature-length film in the Super Mario franchise. In the film, Mario, Luigi, Toad, Peach, and their new friend Yoshi wind up in space, and must stop Bowser Jr.'s nefarious plans to restore honor to the Bowser name.

First announced on March 10, 2024, the film's title was officially revealed in a teaser trailer during the September 2025 Nintendo Direct.[51] The film premiered on March 28, 2026, and was released in the United States on April 1, 2026, and set to be in Japan on April 24, 2026, and in other regions on other dates throughout April 2026.[52] The film is mainly inspired by Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2[2]:5:16 and has been described by Miyamoto as the "main event" of the Super Mario Bros. 40th Anniversary celebration.[2]:4:20

Plot

Megaleg in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
Rosalina defends the Lumas from Megaleg.

Rosalina explores the galaxy in her current home, the Comet Observatory, where she raises her family of Luma children as their mother. One day, as she is about to read them a bedtime story, the observatory is attacked by Megaleg, piloted by Bowser Jr., the son of Bowser, who plots to drain and use Rosalina's power to fuel a planet-destroying doomsday weapon that his father had promised him in his youth. Rosalina fights off and almost destroys Megaleg before a Luma exits the library, looking for Rosalina's comfort. Noticing the Luma, Bowser Jr. fires at the library and attempts to destroy the Lumas, but Rosalina prevents him from doing so. Ultimately, Rosalina is captured, and a Luma attempts to save her before also being captured. Rosalina frees the Luma, who flees to search for help from Princess Peach.

Mario and Luigi arriving at Tostarena Town
The Super Mario Bros. heroically arrive in Tostarena Town.

In the Mushroom Kingdom, Mario and Luigi are hailed as heroes for having previously defeated Bowser and saved both the kingdom, which is where they now live, and the city of Brooklyn. One day, they are called by the Tostarenans to inspect a mysterious disturbance at an Inverted Pyramid in Tostarena Town. Inside, they find a Warp Pipe buried underneath rocks; upon inspecting, they find a creature inside. They attempt to block the pipe back up, but the creature escapes. Before they can fire at it using their Fire forms, the creature cowers in fear. Realizing it is not a threat, Mario carefully lures it out. The brothers find that the cause of the problem was Yoshi. Yoshi had hatched from his egg in the sewers of Brooklyn, originally intended as Bowser's wedding gift to Peach before ending up there after a Bomber Bill exploded in the Warp Zone and sucked Mushroom Kingdom elements, including him, into Brooklyn. Yoshi had found a ladder to the surface and curiously explored the city, until he got into trouble after accidentally collapsing a fossil at a dinosaur exhibit at the American Museum of Natural History. He was chased by the security guards and police non-stop until he escaped through a Warp Pipe in the sewer. Due to a language barrier, Mario and Luigi are unable to understand Yoshi's story. The brothers reveal Yoshi to the Tostarenans before Yoshi wanders off. Although the brothers initially assume he left them, Yoshi comes back on Luigi's bike and rides it home with the two.

Mario and Peach watch Star Bits fall together.

Sometime later, Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi prepare to attend Peach's birthday party. Mario has a present for her, which leads Luigi and Yoshi to correctly assume Mario has feelings for her that he is too afraid to admit. At the party, Mario and Luigi introduce Yoshi to their best friend Toad, who does not take a liking to Yoshi at all. While Luigi, Yoshi, and Toad enjoy the festivities, Mario visits Peach, who is sitting on her castle's roof. Peach reveals to Mario that, not only does she not like birthdays, but that it is not actually her birthday, but rather the anniversary of the day the Toads found her and that she has wondered where she is from ever since. Mario gives Peach her present, which is a new parasol, to cheer her up. Soon after, Star Bits begin to fall from the sky before a comet crash-lands in the kingdom. Upon investigation, the comet turns out to be the Luma that fled from Bowser Jr. and his forces. Peach and Toad heal the Luma, who desperately asks for Peach's help in rescuing Rosalina. The Toad council insists that she does not go, but Mario defends her and tells them she will decide on her own terms. Peach accepts the Luma's request; Toad packs their supplies before the Luma transforms into a Launch Star to send the two to the Gateway Galaxy.

Peach and Wart in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
Peach meets Wart.

At the Gateway Galaxy, Toad points out a missing sign depicting Rosalina; Peach partially recognises her from her past. Their backpack of supplies is then stolen by the monkey Ukiki, who tricked them into thinking he was lost. Ukiki flees to Wart's Casino in the Gateway Underground, where the casino's owner Wart hints to the two that he knows information on Rosalina's whereabouts. After she and Toad defeat Birdo, Clawgrip, Mouser, an army of Ninjis, and finally Wart himself, Peach grows larger with a Super Mushroom and interrogates the toad; he reveals that she is being kept at the Space Junk Galaxy. Toad retrieves his backpack and the two return to the Gateway.

Bowser Jr. wielding his Magic brush in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
Bowser Jr. prepares to fight.

The next day, the Toads find that Peach is gone and panic. To calm them down, Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi agree to handle Peach's duties in her absence, which includes protecting the kingdom from danger and rehabilitating Bowser. Bowser is still tiny from when Peach shrunk him down with a blue mushroom and lives in a miniature castle where he spends his time painting and dealing with his anger issues. Luigi bonds with Bowser while Mario continues to hate him for his past actions against Peach. After they check on Bowser, Peach's Castle is abducted by a UFO piloted by Bowser Jr. After Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi evacuate all of the Toads from the building, the castle is lifted into outer space. Bowser Jr. confronts the trio and demands that they release his father. Mario refuses, which starts a battle between them and Wonder Bowser Jr. During the fight, Kamek appears in Megaleg to assist Bowser Jr. Yoshi swallows Kamek, attempts to take control of Megaleg, but accidentally sends Megaleg flying back into the UFO. The impact damages the UFO, causing it to drop the castle.

Peach's Castle crash-lands in the Honeyhive Galaxy, where the trio is forced to be accompanied by Bowser. Trusting Bowser, Luigi asks Mario if he can be reverted to normal size. Mario mentions that Jr. attacked them, to which Bowser admits he has not been a good father as of late and wants to reconnect with his son. Mario reaffirms to Bowser that his son still loves him, but refuses to return him to his normal size. In response, he baits Mario into doing so by insulting him, which prompts him to throw Bowser to the ground and stomp him in rage. Upon returning to his normal size, to Mario's surprise, Bowser keeps his word about having reformed. The four go to see the Honey Queen to ask if they can be taken to the Gateway Galaxy, but she identifies them as the intruders who destroyed her flower garden and almost has them imprisoned. Bowser sacrifices his liberty by insisting that he pay for their crimes, offering to use his strength to work as a slave. The Honey Queen accepts; Mario forgives and thanks Bowser before he, Luigi, and Yoshi are sent to the Gateway Galaxy on a Mandibug. While he performs slave labor, Bowser is abducted by the UFO. Onboard, he reunites with Jr. and is impressed by his progress.

A T. Rex from The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
Yoshi, Toad, Baby Mario, and Baby Luigi encounter a T. Rex.

The three regroup with Peach and Toad, who have hired Fox McCloud, a space pilot from another universe who takes a swift liking to Mario, to take them to the Space Junk Galaxy via his Arwing. On their way, they are attacked by Bowser Jr., who turns Mario and Luigi into babies with a Super Scope and sends the Arwing crashing into Fossil Falls. Bowser feels guilty for double-crossing the brothers, but Jr. convinces him that they have softened him and made him lose his way; Bowser decides to return to his role as the King of the Koopas. In Fossil Falls, Fox struggles to repair the Arwing while Baby Mario and Baby Luigi wander off and find a sleeping Tyrannosaurus Rex. While Yoshi retrieves Bowser Jr.'s Super Scope from a tree branch, Toad tries to keep the babies from waking the T. Rex. Yoshi accidentally wakes it after retrieving the Super Scope, prompting the group to flee on Yoshi's back while the dinosaur pursues them. During the chase, Toad is also turned into a baby. Yoshi loses the T. Rex by making it fall off a fragile fossil bridge into a pool of water. As the dinosaur emerges from the water, he uses the Super Scope to turn it into a baby and revert Mario, Luigi, and Toad to their adult age. While Fox continues to repair the Arwing, Mario comforts a frustrated Peach. Luigi playfully tests a radio, which is heard by the Lumas; they bring the Comet Observatory to them. Fox pilots the observatory to the Space Junk Galaxy and befriends the Lumas. Meanwhile, Peach explores the library and finds a storybook about her, in which she discovers her origins.

In this film, Rosalina and Peach are sisters who were born and made from star dust. Long ago, as children, they explored outer space together and wielded their shared power to create nature and life. One day, their home planet was attacked by an unknown force. To keep baby Peach safe from danger, Rosalina reluctantly sent her through a Warp Pipe while she fended off the enemy. Peach ended up in the Mushroom Kingdom, where she was found by the Toads who adopted her and, when she became an adult, made her their princess. Due to her young age at the time of their split-up, Peach did not remember Rosalina or her origins.

At the Space Junk Galaxy, Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Yoshi are dispatched onto Planet Bowser, where they set off to sneak in and rescue Rosalina. Mario and Peach are caught by Jr. and sent to a trench filled with traps such as Fire Bars, Grinders, Thwomps, and Spike Traps. Mario and Peach escape the trench by using Peach's parasol to boost themselves out, propelled by a Bob-omb group explosion. Unwilling to let them ruin his promise to his son, Bowser confronts Mario and Peach on a bridge suspended over a lava moat. Mario uses one of Bowser's axes to sever the bridge, dropping Bowser into the lava below. Bowser Jr. is distraught upon seeing his father's fate, to which Mario and Peach feel regretful. However, Bowser survives and re-emerges from the lava as Dry Bowser. Mario sends Peach to rescue Rosalina while Luigi and Yoshi assist the former in fighting the Bowsers; they use power-ups to transform into Drill Mario, Cloud Luigi, and Blimp Yoshi. During the fight, Luigi gets a hold of Bowser Jr.'s magic brush and uses it to paint Mr. Game & Watch, who incapacitates Dry Bowser by scattering his bones. Bowser Jr. recovers his brush and creates a replica of the Ruined Dragon, only for it to unexpectedly swallow him whole. Mario uses a Red Star to transform into Flying Mario and defeat the Ruined Dragon to save Bowser Jr. Meanwhile, Peach locates Rosalina, who is slowly dying as her energy is being drained. Peach and Rosalina use their shared power to destroy the weapon. With Rosalina recovered, the reunited sisters transform Planet Bowser into a clean, nature-filled planet.

Upon returning home, the group finds Peach's Castle still completely gone. Mario states that they shall rebuild the castle together, with Rosalina and the Lumas joining in. Upon its completion, he uses a Cape Feather to transform into Cape Mario. Peach kisses him on the cheek before he flies into the air and places the flag on the castle's peak right before the end credits.

In a mid-credits scene, Fox drops off the Bowsers at a far-off prison before returning home in his fully-repaired Arwing. In prison, the Bowsers are guarded by Lumalee, who currently works as a prison guard and torments them with nihilistic statements. In a post-credits scene, Ukiki robs a Whittle at the Gateway Galaxy, but he gets punched away by a gloved fist. The grateful Whittle's belongings are then returned to it by Princess Daisy.

On May 4, 2021, the president of Nintendo, Shuntaro Furukawa, stated that the company would be interested in producing more animated films based on their games if the Illumination-based Super Mario film, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, was successful enough in theaters.[89] Illumination CEO and producer Chris Meledandri stated during a Variety cover story, before the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, "Our focus right now is entirely on bringing the film out to the audience, and at this time, we're not prepared to talk about what's coming in the future."[90]

During MAR10 Day, on March 10, 2024, Nintendo and Illumimation announced a follow-up film to The Super Mario Bros. Movie after its successful campaign, set to be released on April 3, 2026,[91] with the original directors, producers, and writer returning for the new film and animation underway by Illumination Studios Paris, which had been developing the set designs and storyboards at the time of the announcement.[92]

On October 2024, Toad's voice actor Keegan-Michael Key stated that the sequel would broaden in scope and introduce new characters and some "deep cuts".[93]

Before the film's title reveal, in a press release article from NBCUniversal in May 2025, the film was given the title "Super Mario World", though it was later removed.[94] Later, the domain name "supermariogalaxy.movie" was registered by NBCUniversal on September 3, 2025.[95]

During the September 2025 Nintendo Direct, the film was officially announced to be titled The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, focusing on the Super Mario Galaxy games, with some of the cast and composer Brian Tyler confirmed to be returning; and labeled as the "main event" of the Super Mario Bros. 40th Anniversary celebration.[2] In a Direct in November 2025, co-producer Meledandri announced that the film's animation was weeks away from completion and revealed Rosalina and Bowser Jr.'s appearance and voice actors in the film.[53] A Direct in March 2026 revealed Yoshi, Wart, and Honey Queen's voice actors.[54]

Ed Skudder has confirmed to be returning as the head of story of the film,[96] and later in March 2026 to be providing the voice of R.O.B.[55] During production on the story, the concept on the relationship between Rosalina and Peach was reused and revisited from the first original Super Mario Galaxy game.[97]

  97. ^ "It was also fascinating to discover that the relationship between Rosalina and Peach was already discussed during the production of Super Mario Galaxy, as Miyamoto elaborated on. 'When we were developing Super Mario Galaxy, the director for that game, Yoshiaki Koizumi, and I were discussing what Rosalina and Peach’s actual relationship was. We had this vague idea about what their actual relationship could be, and how it would play into the concept of space. We had a lot of discussion about this, but we never came to a conclusion. So we decided that let's take this opportunity to give this idea some meat and get into the specificity of it, and we had a lot of fun having this discussion back and forth.'" – Barder, Ollie (March 31, 2026).
