The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, much like its predecessor, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, is an adaptation of the Super Mario franchise that borrows many aspects from said franchise. In particular, the film heavily takes inspiration from its namesake games, Super Mario Galaxy and, to a much lesser extent, Super Mario Galaxy 2. Characters from other Nintendo franchises are introduced in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, including Fox McCloud from the Star Fox series and the Pikmin from the series of the same name.

Donkey Kong[edit]
- The hammer appeared during the Illumination logo where a minion from the Despicable Me franchise is seen wielding a hammer from the game, which is accompanied by "Hammer BGM" from the NES version of the game played by another minion.
- A red hammer, similar to the ones from this game, also appears in Bowser Jr.'s arsenal.
- Donkey Kong can be seen jumping on red girders during the montage of Yoshi exploring Brooklyn. During this scene, a voice on a radio mentions the year 1981, referencing the release year of the arcade game.
Super Mario series[edit]
- In the Cantonese dub of the film, Bowser Jr. mentions that his castle level on Planet Bowser cannot be cleared even with 99 lives, referring to the maximum number of extra lives in many Super Mario games.
Super Mario Bros.[edit]
- Sound effects that debuted in this game are used throughout the film.
- The sound effect for remaining time being transferred to the score plays in the Nintendo opening sequence when the "SUPER MARIO BROS. 40TH" text appears.
- "1-Up" plays when Luigi changes the number 39 to 40.

The entrance to the futuristic city being through a fake brick wall with dark blue coloration, and Ukiki jumping backwards to pass through it, are also references to how the player enters the Minus World by glitching through a wall in World 1-2. Additionally the "brick" has a sign on it saying World 1-2. - Mario defeats Bowser by destroying a wooden bridge that he stands on (which is over a moat of lava) using an axe, which is one of the methods by which he would defeat Bowser (and his fakes) in this game.
- Bowser enters the battle in question with two axes, which he is also seen wielding in the poster centered around him.
- "Ground BGM", "Underground BGM", "Castle BGM", and "Underwater BGM" are arranged into the score.

- Toad quotes the line "Do a barrel roll!" to Fox.
- The film's official social media account quotes one of Fox's lines in a post revealing his appearance, "Let's rock and roll!"[24]
- "Opening Theme" is arranged in the film's soundtrack.

- After the confrontation with Bowser Jr. in space, Fox crashlands his Arwing onto the Fossil Falls planet, likely a homage to planet Sauria, both being planets inhabited by dinosaurs.

- The targeting reticle used when Fox fires his Arwing is identical to the one featured in Star Fox Zero.
- The rear of the Arwing displays the Japanese character for "zero" which appears in the official logo of the game.

- Bowser retreats into his shell in a similar way to his Whirling Fortress move.
- The pose Luigi makes when he is accidentally frozen by Ice Mario is the same as his artwork from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.[14]
- Peach attacks a Ninji by using Peach Bomber, her side special move from this series.[25]
- When Mario faces off against Dry Bowser, he mimics his idle fighting pose.
- Mr. Game & Watch's appearance takes cues from his appearance in this series.
