“This is a bit of a tricky number, with the rhythm written in triplets. We use a gamelan instrumentation along with metallic effects to add an ethnic feel. The image we had in mind was of a ruined temple somewhere in Asia. We added some thudding percussion here and there to give an image of of a Thwomp shaking the ground.”
Liner notes in the Mario Kart 8 Original Soundtrack

"Thwomp Ruins"[1][2] is a musical theme composed by Atsuko Asahi that appears in Mario Kart 8, where it plays in the course of the same name.

History[edit]

Mario Kart 8 / Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[edit]

Mario Kart 8 marks the first appearance of "Thwomp Ruins", and it returns for the same purpose in the Nintendo Switch port, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. The theme also appears on the Mario Kart 8 Original Soundtrack. A looping drum set beat is added to the instrumentation whenever the player is driving at top speed while in first place.

A brief arrangement of "Thwomp Ruins" is incorporated into "Staff Credits", which is a medley of various tracks from the game.
