Bob-omb Blast is a Battle mode that first appeared in Mario Kart: Double Dash!! and returned in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as well as Mario Kart World after its addition in version 1.6.0. This mode centers around drivers throwing Bob-ombs at their opponents in order to score points, and features only Bob-ombs obtainable in Item Boxes.

While this mode does not exist in Mario Kart 7, Mario Kart 8, and Mario Kart Tour, one of the rulesets for Balloon Battle in all three games is to use only Bob-ombs. In Mario Kart Tour, this also applies to Double Bob-ombs, Bob-omb Cannon, and Giga Bob-omb.

History[edit]

Mario Kart: Double Dash!![edit]

In Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, each player must gain stars by hitting other players with Bob-ombs. If a player is hit by a Bob-omb, they instead lose a point. The amount of stars needed to win is three for a two-player battle and four for a three-player or four-player battle. Notably, players can hold more Bob-ombs in this mode, with each Item Box giving one extra Bob-omb, up to a maximum of ten per kart (five per character).

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[edit]

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe changes the rules to Bob-omb Blast to be closer to Balloon Battle, with each driver getting five balloons. If all of their balloons are popped, they respawn with three new ones and lose half their points. When there is one minute left on the timer, all Item Boxes turn into Double Item Boxes. The driver with the most points when the timer ends is the winner. The limit of Bob-ombs a driver can hold is still ten and the distance they can be thrown forwards depends on how long the player holds the button.

Mario Kart World[edit]

Mario Kart World introduced the Bob-omb Blast game mode in the version 1.6.0 update. Players now start with six balloons, and can store up to ten Bob-ombs at once. At the last minute of a round, Item Boxes are replaced by Double Item Boxes. Besides those changes, the rules to Bob-omb Blast are the same as those in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
