Coin Runners (known as Coin Battle in the British English version of Mario Kart 7) is a battle mode that debuts in Mario Kart Wii. Similarly to Shine Runners, coins are scattered across the arena. Teams or players have to collect the most coins before time runs out to win. Players lose coins they have obtained if they get hit by items.

History

Mario Kart Wii

Coin Runners first appears in Mario Kart Wii. It is exclusively played in teams, where each driver's individual coin counts contribute to their teams total. The amount of coins a driver can collect seems to be limitless (save for any technical limitations), with the record of at least 70 coins having been held at once.[1] Drivers are able to steal coins by colliding with other drivers.

Mario Kart 7

Coin Runners returns in Mario Kart 7, a maximum of 10 coins can be collected at a time, and they do not count towards the total number of coins the player has collected in their stats.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Coin Runners reappears in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, with the maximum amount of coins a driver can hold being again extended. A record of at least 53 coins has been observed.[2] Coins collected in this mode now count towards unlocking new vehicle parts. On Urchin Underpass, coins are replaced with cash.

Mario Kart World

Coin Runners returns as one of the two Battle modes in Mario Kart World. The maximum amount of coins a driver can hold is now twenty, and coins collected in the mode count towards unlocking new vehicles.
