Coin piles,[1] also known as Coin Stacks,[2] are stacks of coins introduced in Mario Kart Wii and realized as items in Super Mario 3D World. The height of a coin pile varies depending on the quantity of coins within the pile. The coins act as they normally do, earning the player an extra life for collecting 100 of them.

History

Mario Kart series

In Mario Kart Wii, Mario Kart 7, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Mario Kart World,[3] coin piles are used to represent how many coins players have collected in Coin Runners. A single coin pile will appear floating above each racer besides the player character, changing in height as they gain and lose coins. Additionally, excluding Mario Kart 7, coin piles appear in the HUD to represent the player's own coin count, with each coin pile containing up to ten coins. In Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's team mode, the red and blue teams' coin piles are filled with Red and Blue Coins respectively. Coin piles as items also return in Mario Kart World, being found scattered across the world map.[4]

Super Mario series

New Super Mario Bros. 2

In New Super Mario Bros. 2, coin piles are shown only on the title screen as the player collects coins throughout the game.

Super Mario 3D World

A coin pile in Hands-On Hall

In Super Mario 3D World and its Nintendo Switch port, coin piles are collectible and can be found in hidden areas of levels, such as the underground area of Really Rolling Hills and secret underground golden rooms. They are a very common item in the bonus level Coin Express, where they appear alongside coins, coin rings, and Gold Shells.

Super Mario Odyssey

Coin piles are objects in Super Mario Odyssey, acting as they did in Super Mario 3D World. Large numbers of coin piles, called Bound Coin Stacks,[5] can be found in certain hidden or secluded areas. After they have been collected, however, they will be replaced by smaller piles worth only 15 coins if Mario returns to the area. They can also come out of bushes, causing them to bounce along the ground in an erratic fashion, like Super Stars. Once these coin piles bounce into water, or if they bounce for too long, they disappear. These piles are worth 10 coins.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker

Coin piles reappear in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker and its Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS ports of the same name, acting as they did in Super Mario 3D World.

Luigi's Mansion 3

Coin piles also appear in Luigi's Mansion 3. They can be found in the Boutique of Hotel Shops, where Gooigi needs to flash the green light revealed behind the register with the Strobulb to reveal the pile of coins. As he collects them, a Mini Goob appears and signals more Mini Goobs to come. Coin piles also appear in other areas.

Mario Strikers: Battle League

In Mario Strikers: Battle League, coin piles appear in the Strikers Club customization options for Mushroom Hill. Here, they can be used as a fence post or making up the pillars of a goal.

Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope

Coin piles appear in Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, acting as they did in the Super Mario series.
