The "Underwater Theme,"[2] also known as the "Beach Theme,"[3][4] is a musical theme composed by Mahito Yokota for the beach levels in Super Mario 3D Land. The theme is dynamic: when the player is above water, the normal variation with full instrumentation plays, and when the player is submerged in water, a simpler, more subdued variation plays.

It is titled "Super Mario 3D Land Theme / Beach Theme" in the game's sound test, and it was arranged by Yuichiro "Jesahm" Noro. It is also included in the official album Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U: A Smashing Soundtrack.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker[edit]

In Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker and the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS ports of the same name, an arrangement of the "Underwater Theme" plays in Briny Bowl Swimming Hole and Floaty Fun Water Park. Like in Super Mario 3D Land, the theme has two distinct variations for when the player is above or below water. In the Nintendo Music app, both the abovewater and underwater versions are played in sequence on the same track, titled "Briny Bowl Swimming Hole."

Mario Kart World features two arrangements of the "Underwater Theme." One is faster paced and the other is slower paced, the former resembling the above water version of the song and the latter the underwater version. The slower paced arrangement can play exclusively in Free Roam. The faster paced arrangement can play exclusively in routes in VS Race and Grand Prix. In Grand Prix, it is one of three arrangements that can play on the route from Peach Beach to Salty Salty Speedway in the Banana Cup.
