"Underwater BGM"[1] is a musical theme composed by Koji Kondo for Super Mario World, where it plays in the underwater levels. It is a slow-paced waltz arrangement of "Ground BGM" from the same game in the key of F major. The rhythm of the melody is altered to fit the triple meter time of the piece.

History[edit]

Super Mario series[edit]

Super Mario World[edit]

Super Mario World marks the first appearance of "Underwater BGM".

Additional bongo percussion is added to the instrumentation whenever the player is riding a Yoshi. This remix is titled "Yoshi Underwater BGM" in the Nintendo Music app.

Both "Underwater BGM" and "Yoshi Underwater BGM" return for the same purposes in the port of the game included in Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World.

"Underwater BGM" is also included in the official albums Super Mario World and The 30th Anniversary Super Mario Bros. Music. In the Super Mario World album, the bongos from "Yoshi Underwater BGM" are added to the instrumentation for the second half of the theme.

Super Mario Maker / Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS / Super Mario Maker 2[edit]

In Super Mario Maker, Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, and Super Mario Maker 2, the original version of "Underwater BGM" plays in Super Mario World-style underwater-themed levels. "Yoshi Underwater BGM" from Super Mario World plays whenever the player rides a Yoshi.

An ambient arrangement of "Underwater BGM" plays while editing Super Mario World-style underwater-themed levels in the Course Maker. This arrangement uses eight tracks that fade in and out randomly to create a dynamic mix.

Exclusively in Super Mario Maker 2, a music box arrangement of "Underwater BGM" plays in the nighttime version of Super Mario World-style underwater-themed levels.
