"Athletic Theme"[1] is a musical theme in New Super Mario Bros. U, where it plays in sky- and mountain-themed levels. Like "Athletic Theme" from New Super Mario Bros., this theme is a fast-paced, transposed, swing arrangement of "Ground Theme".

New Super Mario Bros. U, New Super Luigi U, and their re-release New Super Mario Bros. U + New Super Luigi U mark the first appearances of "Athletic Theme". It also returns in their Nintendo Switch port, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe. Additional bongo percussion and vocalizations are also added to the theme whenever a player rides a Yoshi or holds onto a Baby Yoshi respectively.

Super Mario Run[edit]

In Super Mario Run, an arrangement of "Athletic Theme" plays in the levels Paratroopas in Mushroom Valley, Sky-High Lifts and Leaps!, Bullet Bill Barrage, Lakitu's Revenge, and Wild Slopes.

A more ethereal version of this arrangement, which plays the main melody on some bells, plays during Coin Rush.

Super Mario Maker 2[edit]

Super Mario Maker 2 features several appearances of "Athletic Theme".

"Athletic Theme" plays in sky-themed courses in the New Super Mario Bros. U style, and its Yoshi percussion remix plays when riding Yoshi in those.

An ambient arrangement that uses eight tracks that fade in and out randomly to create a dynamic mix plays while editing New Super Mario Bros. U-styled sky-themed courses in the Course Maker.

A music box arrangement of "Athletic Theme" plays during nighttime versions of sky-themed courses in the New Super Mario Bros. U style.
