"Super Mario Galaxy 2 Trailer Theme",[2] also known as "Theme of SMG2"[1] or "Main Theme",[3] is a musical theme composed by Mahito Yokota as Super Mario Galaxy 2's main theme, with several arrangements of it being heard throughout the game. The original theme itself is not heard in-game, but was rather used in the game's trailer at the Nintendo Media Summit in 2010.[4] Prior to that, a version with synthesized instruments was used in the game's reveal trailer at E3 2009.[5] The theme incorporates arrangements of "Overture" and "Gusty Garden Galaxy" from Super Mario Galaxy.

History[edit]

Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]

Main articles: Sky Station Galaxy (theme), Wild Glide Galaxy (theme)

While "Super Mario Galaxy 2 Trailer Theme" is not heard in Super Mario Galaxy 2 itself, it is included in the official Super Mario Galaxy 2 Original Soundtrack album under the name "Theme of SMG2" and in the Super Mario History 1985-2010 soundtrack CD under the name "Main Theme (Trailer Arrangement)".

Super Mario Galaxy 2 and the Nintendo Switch port, Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2, feature six additional arrangements of "Super Mario Galaxy 2 Trailer Theme", all of which were arranged by Mahito Yokota and are also included in the Super Mario Galaxy 2 Original Soundtrack album.

An arrangement close to the original theme titled "Sky Station Galaxy"[2] plays in the galaxy of the same name during its first mission. It is later heard during Grandmaster Galaxy's first mission when the player is at the third, fourth, and fifth sections. This arrangement features a different opening and omits "Gusty Garden Galaxy" and "Overture" portions.

An arrangement of "Super Mario Galaxy 2 Trailer Theme" is incorporated in the game's title theme, "Overture", which is named after Super Mario Galaxy's own title screen theme.[2]

Another arrangement, "Pipe Room",[2] plays in bonus rooms accessed via Warp Pipes except for the ones in Rightside Down Galaxy, Slipsand Galaxy, Upside Dizzy Galaxy, and Slimy Spring Galaxy, where "Pipe Interior" from Super Mario Galaxy plays instead.

Another arrangement, "Wild Glide Galaxy",[2] plays in the galaxy of the same name when the player glides with Fluzzard.

A winter/Christmas arrangement, "Freezy Flake Galaxy",[2] plays in the Freezy Flake Galaxy.

The last arrangement is incorporated in the theme that plays in the game's credits, "Super Mario Galaxy 2 Credits",[2] which also incorporates "The Starship's Journey".
