"Gateway Galaxy"[1][2] is a musical theme composed by Mahito Yokota for Super Mario Galaxy, where it plays on the starting planet of the Gateway Galaxy and in the Comet Observatory until the player beats the Good Egg Galaxy mission "Dino Piranha", at which point the theme is replaced by "Rosalina in the Observatory". The beginning of the theme also plays in place of "Observation Dome" when returning directly to the Comet Observatory with a Power Star from galaxies that are not accessed through a dome. It is a soft instrumental piece structured around arpeggiation. The theme primarily features piano and harp instrumentation.

Super Mario Galaxy marks the first appearance of "Gateway Galaxy", and it returns in the Nintendo Switch ports, Super Mario 3D All-Stars and Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2, for the same purposes. A marimba and synthesizer are added to the theme whenever the player is playing hide-and-seek with the Star Bunnies during the mission "Grand Star Rescue". When a Star Bunny has been revealed from its hiding spot, a percussion layer is also added to the theme. In the Nintendo Music app and the official Super Mario Galaxy Original Soundtrack album, the original theme and marimba and synthesizer remix are played in the sequence on the same track.

In The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, a brief arrangement of "Gateway Galaxy" arranged by Brian Tyler plays during Princess Peach and Toad's arrival at the Gateway Galaxy and explore before they meet Ukiki. It is titled "A New World" in the film's official soundtrack.
